Ragged Wilderness area Elk....
« on: August 01, 2015, 12:48:00 AM »
Doing my best to do a elk hunt in the Ragged Wilderness Area in Colorado. We would be backpacking in on a DIY hunt ( me and another tradganger ) we have both been on this type of hunt and killed elk just not in Colorado. It's an OTC tag and I hear rough country so I like it already. We have been researching the area and looking at maps and doing what we can. Looking for the don't do this stuff for the area ,or the do do this info. Really the more I can get from first hand experience for this unit like don't go here cause an outfitter sets up a camp there every year type stuff. We ain't after a trophy hunt or your honeyhole area just need some friendly pointers for the unit....

Its a pretty area.  I can see the Ragged Mtn from where I hunt just north of it.  Ask about ATV access.  Some of the area south of the pass near Redstone is open to ATV I believe.

I called and talked with a guy from the Colorado parks and wildlife , the info I got came off his computer screen. So not much help there he said he would have someone call me back that works in the area if he could. I sure don't want any ATVs around me ( would hope none were in the National Forest ).

( Where you going ? ) is open that's why I put this thread up is to hope to get a heads-up on a trailhead to go in on. And like I said we go hunt to have a good time and enjoy the outdoors , many times I have packed out elk , deer , and bear for guys I don't even know that I found on a mountain. And like I said I don't expect some one to just give up the spot they hunt ( unless you just want to) just looking for friendly advice on an area to start and we will find the elk or we will just have a nice camping trip if we don't. I gave all my maps and all my GPS coordinates for my old elk hunting area to a new friend yesterday. Just time for us to try a new state and have a new adventure , this to me is almost as fun as the hunt is gathering info and looking at maps calling my buddy every 30min about gear or a new plan of atack. I love the planning and everything that goes with it and for whatever reason I like cutting up and getting the meat out no matter who made the shot. Also would be nice to know if an area has good water or if a fire has moved game around things like that. Also should I buy a bear tag  ( is bear numbers good ) . We are doing all the research we can from here in Tx. and will use what we find here and off anywhere else we can find. I just find the best info is from the guy that has been there and done that and don't mind sharing a few helpful hints....

Sam, I would not count on quads NOT being on Forest Service trails in CO. I think you are definitely going to have to be in the designated wilderness. I've not hunted CO since 07 but anything could be on those trails.

From my recollection, bear tags are sold OTC but on a limited basis.  They went on sale during July and I am gonna go on a limb and suggest they are all sold by now.  I was told ( but do not know if it is true) that a lot of the area south of HWY 133 allows quads off road.  We hunt northwest of where you are looking.

There are bears all around, especially if they are not grazing sheep there ( shepherds shoot bears).  From what I have seen, there is a really big chance for a cinnamon color phase.

If you kill an elk ( or find a carcass) there will be a bear on it soon. They feed heavily on oakbrush acorns if the crop s good, and the upper north slopes very often have berries and choke cherries. The tags went up in price and I am hesitant to buy an elk and a bear tag now, although I have in the past.

There are also trout streams around.  There might be small game ( ie grouse) to hunt also. I have been spotty seeing them and almost always on the edges of woods / sage fields.

There are also kitties, the big kind ( though none named, that I know of).

No ATVs is a plus.

For scouting, get a map, MyTopo, com is a good fast source.  Check out the area for lack of roads ( there may be jeep trails, but those are likely not used.  Look for water sources.

I would hit the wooded ridges first, then look for wallows.  Early season is often hot, at elevation standing in the sun then moving ten feet, into shade, will yield what feels like 20 degrees difference.  Dark timber ( pines on north slopes) is a good place to be.  Glass the oakbrush across from it.  Bring binoculars.

Learn to stop walking in the shade, not in the sun.  It is also better to keep you hidden that way.

If you come in from the north on Hwy 133, the road goes over Huntsman ridge just NW of Marble at McClure Pass.  The view from up there is really worth stopping for ( safely) and snapping some photos.   Keep going north to Carbondale and try to find the White House, a food place that serves AWESOME pizza and beer. ( Gosh I hope it is still there).

Sam,  I have never been disappointed in having another tag in my pocket.  Makes a real easy transition to a plan B if the elk are not cooperating.  I would never hunt Colorado again with out a small game/bird permit.

One of the best memories I have hunting with my Dad was in Colorado 15 years ago.  We had a bull bugling at the bottom of a drainage and ran across a covey of grouse.  Needless to say we did not go after the elk and lost many arrows shooting at the grouse and got a few grouse  for lunch.

The extra tag just let us have fun with the opportunity that fell in our lap.  Might be the same with a bear tag.

I feel the same about having an extra tag just not worth it if if no bears are there. Should know in the next few days if we are for sure going....

Plenty of bears in there.  I haven't hunted the Raggeds in a lot of years but it would be a tough hunt without horses.  Doable but if you come in through Anthracite Creek you are talking at least 5-6 miles in before you get to country you're really going to want to hunt.

We would pack in with saddle panniers and then ride the horses from base camp once we got in there.  The beauty of that were that we had the horses to pack out elk.  There use to be an outfitter that would pack in a camp for you and then pack your game out but I don't remember who.  That is the only way I would go in there without pack animals of my own.

Another option would be to google someone who would rent you horses, mules or llamas.  Beautiful country and a lot of fun to hunt for sure.

I agree a bunch, but there is a little difference in cost of tags here.  I am not rolling in dough and I make a choice is all.  If I had more available cash, I would have several tags in my pocket when I go west, including mule deer, small game, fishing, elk and bear.

But. . . .   Just getting to go chase some elk is pretty cool.  I can still sneak up on the rest and yell B A N G !  Besides, I usually get to see more when I don't have a tag for that species !

Yea I hear ya , I heard the best way to keep a bear out of your camp is hang your bear tag on your tent , and the best way to see bears everyday is not to have a tag in your pocket...

Trust me I know, every time I have not had a mule deer tag, they seem to walk by me trying to make fun of me.  Yet I have not connected on a mule deer when I was lucky enough to draw a tag.
