3D and mosquitoes?
« on: August 02, 2015, 07:22:00 PM »
Been shooting at my local club and the mosquitoes have been awful. Was wondering if anyone has had any luck with repellent. I was thinking about thermacell, however I did not know what its effectiveness would be with the constant moving of 3D or stump shooting.

Thanks, Schafer

+1 on the ThermaCell.  I used it this year for the first time as a mosquito repellant.  I use a small carabiner hook on the quiver belt.
Previously I had only used it during hunting season as a scent dispenser.

Our club actually sprays all the ranges with a chemical fogger at least once a week. The insecticide is called FLIT. Never have to carry a thermocell or spray down before shooting.

We put out the mosquito pellets in the standing water, doesn't eliminate them totally but makes it bearable. Looking into installing some Bat Boxes too, they are known toeat thousands of mosquitoes a night, will check out that FLIT too!

Use bug repellent with 20% picaridin. It helps. I don't like the way deet feels. Never tried the thermacell though, if at some point I hunt the southern states for sure I will have it.

Am I the only one who has ever had a problem with Thermacell? Damn thing blew up in my face. I wasn't hurt but almost peed my pants! I don't like DEET either, but I have found that some of the natural ingredients brands work. However, you will need to reapply more frequently. Natural Causes is the name of one product that I have had success with. These natural products don't have a tendency to destroy the finish on bows, guns, and such equipment.

Sam, glad you were not hurt. I have been using Thermocells for more than 13 years.. That's the first time I have heard of one blowing up, but I can see how one could since there is "butane gas" and fire in a plastic enclosure.

If you don't mind smelling like a girl Amber Romance works awesome. Keeps away Mosquitos, gnats, noseeums down here in Louisiana. I was skeptical at first but once I tried it being the mosquito magnet I am I use it all the time so do a lot of others down here. I can't stand the way any bug spray feels this doesn't bother me at all just smells girly but works great.

Better to smell like a girl than mosquito bait.

Just take some leaves off a mint plant, chew some, take the others crumple them up and rub them all over. They won't come next to you !
If you don't like that, get some Badger's bug spray, very effective and, has no bad effects at all !
