First Day of the Hunt Report
« on: August 17, 2015, 04:06:00 PM »
So, in the dark, I climbed up the back (sheer side with no trail) of the mountain to get into my brush blind without going through the meadow where the deer usually are at feeding at first light. It was a rough climb and took longer than I thought and it was light before I got there. But, not sure that mattered since there were hunters riding horses all around the meadow when I got up there. I think if I can get up there during the week (job and family permitting) then the spot would be pretty calm with few people. But, maybe it's not a good spot on the weekend. It was Sunday, so I thought here in Utah the mountains would be a little less crowded but nope. I still-hunted away from the meadow down the ridge where I've seen bucks bedding but only saw one doe after I bumped her (though she calmly walked away) out of her bed at 30 - 40 yards. I tried stopping her with my new Deer Talk call to try it out but it didn't bring her in. Not sure if she stopped or responded to it in any way because the trees were dense and I couldn't see her anymore. Does anyone have any advice or tips for using the call? I'm going to try another spot next Sunday that I expect to be less popular.

I'm stoked that the archery season is here in Utah! How long until your seasons?

This early a fawn in distress call is what to use. It's either they are going to come running to you or away from you. I wouldn't try calling to any bucks yet as they are not rutting and won't respond and you will most likely educate them.

Kansas starts mid September
Vegetarians are cool, I eat them with every meal!
