I'm Feeling a lot better about going Traditional
« on: August 28, 2015, 10:58:00 PM »
I've been a wheel bow hunter for many years, but I started traditional archery late last season with my first traditional bow, a 60" Holm Made River Runner at 45#.
To be honest, I was a little concerned when I started because it was way more difficult than I had anticipated. I never got comfortable enough to even take my new bow out hunting..
But with our deer season only 2 weeks away and a lot of time spent practicing, I'm feeling pretty good. I shoot six arrow groups and I can pretty consistently hit six out of six kill shots on my 3D deer targets at 18 yds from my 12 foot high deck standing on a step stool.
Who knows what will happen when that first deer steps out,.. But at least I feel good about my first opening day with my tradional bow..   :)
I have really learned a lot reading all the posts here on Trad Gang.
Thanks,
DD

Best of luck bud! Traditional archery is a great challenge but that is why we do it.  Stick with it because I promise it will be worth it in the end.

Good luck! If you think you are hooked now, wait till you walk up to the first critter you shoot with a stickbow! There are few other feelings as great!

Yea that first shot at an animal is addicting enough let alone the first kill.
I was hooked early on in my archery career, but like another bad habit, smoking, I was drawn back to the compound.
I bought into all the hype about speed etc etc.
I still dabbled in trad but nothing seriuos.
Over the last 2-3 yrs though I have laid down the wheels and coffin nails and focused on trad.
There is a satisfaction from tuning and practicing and finally getting it all to click despite the frustrations.

Way to go Dave. Your story parallels mine. I was in to traditional a few years ago thanks to my friend Mike, aka Bamboo.  Made the mistake of overbowing myself with a couple of HH kits that Mike and I finished. Nice bows but way too heavy for these old bones. Went back to the wheels but thankfully "saw the light" about a year ago. Having more fun than should be allowed. Going out back in a few mins. and sling a few. I'm sure you'll do fine when that first one shows up. Just let it happen.

Don't despair !  If you can only shoot very well to 5 yards, set up well and wait for a five yard shot.   If ten yards,  easy, fifteen, even easier.

Not only are you learning to shoot a bow that requires a bit more of you in the story, the whole process of hunting requires a bit more of you in the story.  I am NOT putting down other bows.  Just saying this endeavor requires more of you in the equation.  Maybe keep that in your mind when beset upon by all the advertisements for making things easier and surer.

Go get them and good luck.

Welcome! Just wait till you get that first shot and subsequent kill! You'll be hooked for life!

You've been practising to the point that you're confident in your shooting, so my guess is when that deer walks out in front of you, you're gonna need sharp knife.     Good luck, and have fun!
