Basement backstop ideas
« on: September 03, 2015, 10:43:00 AM »
Folks,
My wife has given me the go ahead to make a shooting lane in our finished basement.

I need a curtain style backstop to put in front of a wall and window. I'd like it to be about 10 foot square as I have 5 kids that also shoot.

Do you have any recommendations for a backstop that will protect my window? We are an all traditional shooting family.

Thanks!

Well are you wanting to just buy something or go cheap? does it have to be pretty or just functional?

This idea could look really good with eyelets on top and hooks to the ceiling. Maybe a frame of stained planking to add some decor

Just don't miss and you'll be fine...j/k.

X2 on the horse mats...you can hang them or make a folding frame and secure it to the wall. That way you can fold it when not in use.

Horse mats or a couple of layers of carpet should do it.

Try it outside to determine how many layers required before placing it in basement

Hey there, I've got a big piece of horse stall mat from TSC in my backdoor range in Spring Lake I was about to tear down. Want to come shoot it and try it out? It's the biggest/thickest one they sell.

You might get some other ideas from different stuff I have setup. PM me your phone number if you want to coordinate.

Horse mats, for sure. You can get them thick enough to be effective, and the flat black surface will not look ugly in your basement. Also, they are not prohibitively expensive.

horse stall mats are THE best backstop you can get. mine is outside, but you could easily adapt it for indoors.

4'x6' horse mats are 3/4" thick from TSC, at least hereabouts.

Heavy, but effective... mount it on a framework and put a curtain rod across the header so you can draw curtains to hide it if that is necessary...

Another vote for the horse matts. You could buy one of the curtain types, but it'd need some stand-off space to stop the arrow, and that equates to a reduced shooting range. There's ways to make the horse matts a little more aesthetically pleasing, from painting them, to mounting them so they swing down from the ceiling when you want to shoot, etc. But hands down those things will stop an arrow.

Spend a lot and you can get the hanging fabric backstop you could fold up
