Two Tracks String Scallops - an ongoing review for the season.
« on: September 14, 2015, 10:19:00 AM »
I am using string scallops for the first time this year, while hunting. I have used them in the past on some of my bows I do not use for hunting.

Chuck sent me some "test' scallops and some newer ones he's trying to develop that are smaller than the ones he offers now.

As my season progresses I will try to post timely comments on their use and my experiences.

For the first installment of my "test" I made up a string last night for one of my 70s Super Kodiaks. I have two that are identical. Both are 76s and both are 55x. One string came with one bow and is a fat B50 and the nock fit is tight for the factory GT nocks I use on my GT Trad arrows. My new string is B55 and I made it to fit the GT nocks very well. A light tap of the string loosens a dangling arrow when suspended from the string. These bows, BTW, are only 54 digits apart in serial number.

The fat string causes a hard snap when nocking an arrow. The new string has a light snap. The fatter string causes the bow to be very loud even with full size scallops and wool yarn wrapped around he string at the limb tips. I also have Velcro loop pads under this bowstring. The new string with one set of standard sized scallops is nicely quiet and has just a slight bit of hum after the release of an arrow. This string has no yarn wraps or limb Velcro. Arrows are right are 10gpp.

Report number one - you need a string that fits your arrow nocks well. Just tight enough to hold it, but loose enough to allow it to fly of the string with minimal sound.

None of my tests and feedback on this will be scientific. I have no instruments to measure the noise/sound of the release. My reports will be purely of my experience.

His large scallops weigh roughly 11 grains (rectangular) each. His smaller version (diamond pattern, like diamonds on a Poker card deck) weighs around 6 grains each. Keep in mind, these are felted wool made by Chuck from sheep he raises and from felt he and his wife create at their home/farm.

One important thing to keep in mind as well. These scallops need no tools for installing and need no additional string to tie them on and keep them in place. They slide easily for adjustment to allow you to "tune" the harmonics to your bow and your style. I am using Flemish twist strings. If using endless loop, you may need to tie them in place if your string has no twists when strung on your bow.

Feel free to offer your own comments if you actually use these. Any feedback will help our trad business brothers and sisters in their future business decisions.

So far I am impressed with his scallops and their simple concept.

Please excuse any spelling errors. My wife is hoovering over me wanting to get on the book of faces. I must go.

These are great silencers, and very easy to install, remove, and re-install.  Just received a bunch of them from Mr. TT a couple days ago.

I reserved the fat string with thinner serving after posting above. Now it's quieter but not as quiet as the string I made last night. Still too tight a nock fit to my liking, but shoots well.

I'll hit the woods this evening.

Great write up Bud!  I have had the new thinner/smaller ones on 5 bows for the past 4-6 weeks.  Absolutely perfect!
