Splicing furs

Does anyone know how to splice rabbit fur together? I am making a quiver and need to splice a bit for the opening.

Not an expert but since rabbit skin is so fragile I think I'd hand stitch it together trying to get the fur laying in the same direction.

Hand stitch it from the flesh side. You can remove some of the fur at the stitch line so the seam isn't bulky and the fur will cover the seam from the outside.

In reality you need a fur sewing machine...

However, you can do it by hand.  I would use a stitch length of no more than 2mm.

You need to cut the pieces from the back, ie the none fur side, with a knife.  Don't use siccors otherwise you will get a very noticable line at the join.  When cutting you don't want to cut the fur, just the skin...So be careful.

Mark the stitches on the skin side, with a marking wheel.

Join the pieces with fur together and stitch them.  It would be easiest in a stitching pony and if you don't have one then its v easy to make and worthwhile. Make sure there is no fur sticking out the sides as you are sewing.

Hoep that sort of helps.

You might want to back the fur with this leather if you are using rabbit fir for the quiver. Rabbit fir is pretty thin and tears easily. The leather backing will give it strength. Contact cement works well for this.

forgot to say that you should buy some glover's needles.  These should go straight through the leather without much problem...since they are for leather glove making... They are relatively cheap

I use rabbit fur on a quiver I made and it looked very nice, for a while. The rabbit hair let go like a dog shedding after a while, it was a real mess. Personally I'll never use rabbit fur again. Good Luck!!!
