Need Recommendation for a TOPO app for my IPhone...
« on: October 14, 2015, 10:36:00 PM »
Hey all,

I'd like to get an APP for my IPhone 6+ that lets me download, view and use TOPO maps along with the GPS functions built into the phone.  Many of them don't need a cell connection and allow you to download the needed maps and call them up whenever you need them with or without a cell connection.

I would like to get one that lets me get the TOPO's that I need for my area WMA's, save them, bring them up and add waypoints, and be able to navigate to them when I need to.  I mainly want to be able to add the locations of my truck or campsite to make sure I can get back to them no matter where I wander off to.

I know there's some great apps out there and I'd like to get some recommendations from you all.  I know a stand alone GPS unit would be the best way to go, but the ones that do what I would like to do with the TOPO's would cost a lot of money and that pretty much eliminates them when a good app might cost only $15 or much less.

Can you help out and give some suggestions please?

Thanks for your time and help.

Have you checked out the HUNT app by onXmaps? They have a free 7 day trial. That way you can see if it'll work for your application before purchasing.   http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/apple-app-subscription

I checked it out a few months ago, but didn't get a chance to see the TOPO map features.  I got the idea that it was mainly for being able to see who owned a piece of property as you pulled it up on the base map.  I don't think I even downloaded a TOPO on it.  I know I didn't go out in the woods with it.

I might have the wrong opinion of it totally.  I admit that I don't know very much about it at all.  It could be exactly what I am looking for and I don't know it.
One other feature I think I looked at was how they had maps for public lands in different states and my state, Texas, wasn't one that they had at that time.  At least I think it was this app that has this feature.

Please correct me about whatever I said that's incorrect.  I don't want anyone reading this and thinking wrong stuff based on what I said.

Thanks for the help S2.

If I'm not mistaken, they have Texas. So far they're customer service has been great. Try checking in with them to see if the can answer all of your questions.

Here's an image of the different base maps. I think topo is one option, but I'm not sure if it's detailed enough for your needs. I've been using "imagery". "Imagery" is like looking at google earth.

It seems that Texas is available for everything now. It took a bit of a learning curve, but the guys at ON X walked me through it.

Hope this helps.

I cannot recommend Gaia gps enough. Very handy! It does not require cellular service to operate either. It marks way points, tracks movement, gives you access to 10's of thousands of maps (especially usgs), it really does replace a typical gps unit. It'd pricey at 20 bucks but, totally worth it. You really should buy a recharge unit for it though as it does drain battery life. Again though it functions fine on airplane mode.

I use Motion-X GPS. Now it has many map types, but not a strict topo with elevation lines like you might need in larger mountains. But it's got 11 other map types, terrain, satellite, road, hybrids from Bing, Apple, and Google maps.

No cell service needed, able to pre-load maps as needed. Or usually I just view and scroll around prior to a trip, and it keeps that loaded in memory with no other work by me.

It's a full featured gps program as strong as any standalone gps unit. Never use my garmin 76csx anymore. I do carry a brick charger as needed, and use airplane mode too.

There's lots of excellent options these days.

x2. I used it this year while elk hunting, and my Garmin never got turned on.

Trimble Oudoors has a free app called My Topo Maps which I use occasionally. You can select from full topo to aerial photo by sliding a switch on your screen, and you can order paper maps of your preferred location.

Avenza PDF Maps. It's FREE, you pre-download FREE USGS quads, then can use it in airplane mode. It's all I need for mountain hunting.
