Canting a short bow
«
on:
October 22, 2015, 05:28:00 AM »
I was just practicing with my fifty four inch Black Widow PCHX and was noticing I shot a lot better group at twenty meters with it slightly canted.
Is it better to shoot a short bow canted because of the small sight window.
thanks

Many people I know, myself included will cant short bows due to their usual short sight window. By canting, it 'opens up' the sight window and gives a much better view down range of the target.. That's just my perspective

That makes sense to me. I'm shooting a longbow now, not much of a sight window to speak of, and I shoot it better canted. It also puts the arrow nock directly under my eye.

Getting the arrow under the eye is key. Some find that the posture of shooting with a canted bow is more conducive to bowhunting shots versus a more straight up and static target shooting posture.

I agree. I've owned recurves that were cut 3/16" passed center, and I still had to shoot with a cant. I just have a wide face I guess!

Thanks for advice guys, I have five short bows and love shooting with them. Two Black widows and three Cascades, the BW PCHX has a low wrist grip which l really like, having shot longbows for years.I have a wide face as well and short arms and I have had my left arm which l hold the bow with broken twice and cannot fully straighten it.

I experimented the other day with all kinds of cants between Olympic and 45 degrees. Slight cant like 5 to 10 degrees money.... Olympic uncomfortable. And over to 45 degrees arrow veered left and hand to compensate. I guess it wasn't underneath my eye.

54" KB and I cant the bow. Better sight picture & hand/eye/arrow alignment for me... I can shoot more or less cant as needed.

I cant all of them, short or long. I usually cant the bow more when I'm closer to my target and less at greater ranges.

I cant my 54" Thunderchild. I found I shoot longbows better that way and recurves straight up.

I just naturally cant the bow when i shoot. Longbow, recurve, no matter. We were at a christmas party and one of the games involved a marshmallow bow, canted that too! Just the natural way i shoot now after all these years.

I have found shutting my eyes and then holding both arms horizontal out in front of me,when I open my eyes both hands are canted. I have to think and twist my wrists and forearms to get my hands vertical. Its even the same when throwing a punch, you will unconsciously cant your hand to throw a punch.

The trick is to make sure that BOTH hands (that includes your draw fingers) cant at the same angle...or expect some plucking to happen. That's especially true if you use a 'deep hook' on the string.

TSP can you enlighten me on the difference between a deep hook and a shallow hook. I hold the string in the first joint of all three fingers.
thanks
