I love bowhunting! Even when I miss!
« on: November 13, 2015, 01:26:00 PM »
So, Fridays at my office are a little slow because we get every other Friday off, which means when we do work, only half the office is there.  Today, being slow like every Friday, I was thinking I'd go sit in a treestand I have in a small woodlot near my office for about an hour at lunchtime.  I haven't seen any deer at this woodlot this year yet, but have in the past, so the goal was more to just see if I could see any deer moving around, being the rut and all.

Not long after I get in the stand, I hear some crashing and see what looks like a bunch of deer running down the hill about 150 yards away.  After sitting the stand for about 30 minutes, I have two does come running toward me, but then veer off to my left about 50 yards out.  They never even slowed down.  I was thinking maybe a buck would be following and a grunt might bring him in, but he never showed up.  I decided after about 50 minutes in the stand that I should get back to work, so I lowered my bow to the ground and was getting ready to start climbing down, when I see an 8-point buck coming my way about 50 yards out.  I started pulling my bow back up, hoping he wouldn't see it and keep coming.  Somehow, I got the bow back up and got an arrow on the nock without alerting him, and he kept coming.  At about 25 yards out, he turned around an started walking directly away from me.  I gave a little grunt in my grunt call, and he turned around and started working his way slowly back my way.  He walked right into my shooting lane at about 15 yards, perfectly broadside, and my arrow flew right over his back! He darted forward a few steps, looked around, but never did see me, but he still decided he didn't want to be there and trotted off before I could string another arrow.  It was a miss, but it was a fun lunch break!

I called my hunting buddy, that still hunts with a compound and has been giving me grief about hunting with a recurve this year to tell him all about it.  His first question was, "if you had had a compound, would you have hit it?"  My reply was, "I don't know, but I don't care.  I'm having too much fun this way."  Truth be told, I probably would have meat in the freezer now with the old compound, but this way is so much more fun, I'll never go back.  I just pointed out to my buddy how many deer I have had within 15 yards this year, and although I haven't harvested one yet, I'm doing everything else right.  I feel I have become a much better hunter this year hunting this way, and have proved to myself that I can get deer in close, and on public land, too.

As a tally, I had a monster within about 10 yards that saw me before I could release my arrow. Shot wasn't fired.  I then had a near miss right over the back of a doe (might have actually been a button buck) at about 15 yards, and now just missed this guy.  Hopefully I can keep this up and seal the deal soon.  But even if I don't put meat in the freezer, this is still my favorite hunting season yet!

X2 on great attitude and lucky for clean misses. Make sure you bend at the waist when shooting from a stand or on ground shooting up/down hill. That is part of the reason you are shooting high and add a lil deer fever in with that too. I don't know if you practice shooting from a stand much but its different then shooting from the ground, so if your going to hunt from stand make sure you practice from one. Good luck and hope you get things worked out and keep having fun!!!

Remember to pick a spot and to pick it in the right place.  Aim for the spot, not the whole deer.   Easy to say..... not so easy to do.

Stay in there, sounds like you are doing things right to get these shot op's.

Thanks for the comments and advice.  I have practiced a little from elevated places, but I think the bend-at-the-waist thing is something I need to practice a little more to make sure it's second nature when a deer comes in.  I always have a couple of squirrel arrows in my quiver, and will take practice shots at leaves or stuff on the ground from the stand to make sure I'm shooting right, but I can do some more.  The "doe" I missed earlier in the season was shot from the ground.  She/he was a little more wary, and may have ducked the arrow.  I appreciate the good advice.

Agree!
An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.

I waited for turkeys to feed up my ridge on Saturday for over an hour, only to have a hen duck my arrow at 22 yards.  My son bagged his, but daughter missed hers.  We bought an out of state tag, drove for 5 hours and I missed!  I will do it again in April, but hope to score.  Hunt, outfoxing them is more than half, shooting skills are second

I remember one year I missed 10 times. I was having so much fun that year that never once did I consider going back to a compound. The 11th shot hit the mark and the rest is history. Keep at it and have fun, it will all come together eventually.

I missed twice last year.  I didn't practice enough out of an elevated stand and that was my issue.

Lots of people miss with compounds too, even firearms.

It's all a part of the challenges of hunting. I understand what you mean but I don't know if I'd necessarily call missing fun.

I missed a 10pt this year, shot over his back after a twig committed suicide by jumping in the way.  I was grateful to see him and get the chance.  I felt better with the clean miss rather than gut shot or wounding him.  I did take his 9pt brother a couple days later.  I love using the entire aspect of hunting rather than killing.  Prep, location, timing, and calm nerves are all part of the experience.

I wouldn't call missing the fun part.  The fun part is knowing that I did enough things right, that, throw in a little luck, I'm successfully creating shot opportunities on public land.  I'm glad that both of my shots this year were clean misses, but I'd definitely be "gladder" if I had made the shot 6" lower.

I had another buck chase a doe right by me yesterday from the same stand, but they were over my right shoulder (I'm right handed) and I couldn't make a shot.  Before I got out of the stand, I shot a couple of my stump-shooting arrows at leaves where these deer have come through to make sure I was bending at the waste and using correct form.  I'm confident I will get things together and make something happen sooner or later.  I'm just hoping I get at least one more chance to do it this year.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!
