Help with Whip wood choices!
« on: December 25, 2015, 10:42:00 PM »
Ordering a new Whip soon, no idea what to choose for wood choices.

64" Whip HS tillered 3 under 47# @ 28"

If those of you who have whips could post what woods you have that would be really helpful. Thanks!

mine is ebony riser with black limba veneer. There are a few cocobolo risered whips on his inventory page that look pretty sweet. you can never go wrong with cocobolo  ;)

He should have some black/white ebony that's about ready to go.  He used some tiger myrtle on a set of Lynx limbs for me recently that was nice if you like the look.  Also has been putting out some great burl myrtle.

I usually just tell him to use the best stuff in the house.  He won't disappoint.

I just received a bow from Cory Engert with mango belly lam, crazy pretty grain! Also Carpathian elm offers great figures.

I always wondered how I would handle the decision you are having to make. I know I like contrast between riser and limbs. Dark riser and light limbs always comes to mind. As mentioned above, Coco is a faithful standby for riser. Personally, I've seen enough straight grain wood that I know it wont go into my bow. Spalted, burls and other figured wood of a lighter color would have to go into my limbs. Best wishes and let us see how she comes out. I've always been amazed at how fast Dan can put a bow out he and his help must work non stop.

I have to agree with danshao, I really like the looks of ebony and black limba on a hunting bow.

I like North American woods in my bow, so my Whip has some nice myrtle limb veneers and it really looks nice. The riser is phenolic with osage and walnut layers.  My next made for em bow will likely be a Toelke Pika with an osage riser and brown glass.

I had an HS with a Wenge riser and Black Limba veneers. It was handsome and stealthy looking

Wenge is black and dark brown.

I also had one of his lighter colored HSs that had a stabilized quilted maple riser and figured maple limbs.Classic grip with beavertail wrap.Maple and maccassor ebony overlays. It was dazzling and elegant.

The super Static I had was maccassor ebony riser and Figured myrtle limbs amongst other woods. It was sharp.

Thiers really a lot of choices.

Went with the takedown, with locator grip.

Bocote accents in the riser, and told Dan to pick what he thinks would look best for limbs.

You will be very happy with your decision to upgrade to the bowbolt.  Great system and the mass weight is perfect.
