What an evening !
« on: January 02, 2016, 09:46:00 PM »
Have had a head cold, sneezing, runny nose, you know how that works for hunting....

Thought I'd try it tonite, got on stand about 2 hours before dark in a fencerow where the deer cross to get to a beanfield.

Saw a bunch of wildlife, a couple gobblers, some rabbits and a squirrel or 2......   ;)
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I had a wonderful night as well.  Had a coyote run off 2 does that were working my direction.  Then saw 15+ does working through a bottom about 75 yards away.  They came bolting back towards me but not close enough.  I figured that coyote had circled and spooked all of them too but nope!  there were about 30 turkey's coming through along the creek making a TON of noise and pushed the deer back.  Then right at dark I had a target buck of mine wind me.  Wish I could've connected but it was a great night non the less.

I watched the 2 gobbler for some time before the first doe came into sight right there with them.

I'm in the corner of my little farm about 40 yards from the cornerpost to the north with my back to the fence. Ladder stand in a scraggly locust but I have a bunch of pin oak limbs complete with leaves woven in around the stand. It will soon be tested.....

The first doe comes west along the south fence to an old Osage tree, there she hangs out on the other side where I can't see her for quite a while.  Then 4 more does come across the snowy bean field straight from the south. They are intent on some standing beans on my place....

The sun has now slid down past the horizon, the gobblers have headed south to the bigger timber to roost, and still the other 4 come. They head towards the doe under the old Osage tree and she comes out a bit to meet them. She is met with some front feet kicks and jabs from the biggest doe. This forces her to jump the fence onto my place about 50 yds east of the corner of the place. Well thinks I ,I'll get to watch em all cut thru the switchgrass to the beans 50 yards out.....

The lone doe instead comes around the field edge. Hmmm , I best stand up and get ready. She comes along my edge and the other 4 come thru the corner gate behind her.

Its now about 32 degrees and the wind is still 10 mph from the wsw. My new Christmas cabelas wool with windstop from my wife,  along with the windstop vest my bud Steve Grice gave me is keeping me quite comfy tho.

Oh yeah, the deer. I was real happy just bein comfy!  :D

The doe who got kicked and jumped the fence has now come around the edge and is going to be downwind of me pretty quick, so I decide to shoot her if she stops on her own. She is out in the switchgrass and big bluestem CRP grass a little.

She is now about 18 yards straight East of me, soon to be dangerously close to downwind. I had dropped some milkweed fluff earlier and it went out a hundred yards before sinking to deer nose level but the nose knows if you know what I mean.

She comes into a couple bare spots in the tall grass, right on thru the first while I'm at full draw, stops in the next one, arrow is gone and looks good. She is straight ahead and low and fast thru the tall grass. Watched her and tried to mark last place I saw her. Listening is out of the question as 3 of the other 4 run behind her.

The last doe (kickboxer) is still standing in the corner of the field. Now she starts down the edge , coming along at about 15 yards out. OK then, I get another arrow on the string.

Remember when I said the pin oak limb brush I put in the tree was gonna get tested? This is the 5th deer coming along here now tonite and none have even looked up here.

She closes to straight out in front of me seemingly calm. I draw ,anchor and it's gone. With some kind of Matrix move, the arrow catches her in the neck and she is down kicking. The next one she doesn't dodge and soon she is still.

Stay sharp, Kenny.

Now I go look for the other one, the blood is sparse and she soon cuts out across a beanfield.

I go home and eat and summon some help, when they arrive we go back to look.

Its been 2 hours and figuring she won't bed in the bean field, we go to the top of the hill and shine the light down her tracks. Not in the field and still sparse blood, so we will look in the morning, hope the yotes don't beat us there.

We go back and dress the big doe, here is a knife my bud Mike Baker made me and the bow I built last spring. That's the 2nd arrow, she broke the first when she fell.

To be continued tomorrow....
Stay sharp, Kenny.
