a couple of Knapping Questions ??
« on: October 17, 2007, 07:05:00 PM »
Where do you get your knapping supplies and what stone is easiest for a beginner. I am totally fascinated with the process and want to hunt with some stone points. Does anyone sell them?

I made most of my tools myself, and started practicing pressure flaking on scrap glass. Broken up porceline toilets worked well too, and their thickness requires percussion work as well. Cheap way to get a feel for things.

Can anyone recommend a good book or dvd for a complete beginner?

Here are a couple of good supply houses.

The best way to learn is to go to a knap in and watch listen and break some rock. Ask questions.  Obsidian is good to learn on but I like Dacite better.

I found some pretty good lessons on youtube. I also spent a couple hours looking at the museum at Cahokia mounds ( it's 5 min from the house.)
Lots of different heads on display. I've heard you can use junk computer screens. I'm going to try to make my own tools. they seem pretty simple. Thanks for the links Ron, I'll check them out.

Gut and jmo thanks for the info. I checked out his site and there was supposed and there was a knapping class scheduled for tommorrow.  I called cahokia mounds to register and they said it had been cancelled. Bummer!  I guess I'll have to go hunting again in the a.m.  :goldtooth:
