Suggestions for a Release.....

Hey all,

I'd like to try a release for a bit.  I am trying to build back up and it's going slower than I hoped.  I have to frequently take breaks because of the pain in my joints from a condition I have that is permanent.  I think the temporary use of a release will help me to shoot more as opposed to hardy shooting at all or just shooting  few arrows a day.

I have one of the WINN Glove Trigger releases that I've owned for many years.  I got it when I bought my compound and just kept it when I sold it.  It works pretty well, but I'd like to try some others that are used by TRAD shooters.

I've seen a few that look interesting like the one made with a deer antler and a hook.  I know there are lots more out there though.

Can you all post some info about releases that you have used or have seen or heard about over the years?  I'd like to find one that would work well for me.

Actually releases have been around in the trad world for more then 50 years.  The deciding point is going to be the center shot of your bow as the release does not induce paradox in your arrow and the arrow is going to come out straighter then with fingers.

Hey all,

I am in Spring....about 20 minutes north of Houston.  I'm right below the Woodlands.

I will use mine a bit, but I have found that my arrows fly different when I use this release.  I anchor to the same point, but when I release I get porpoising from my arrows that I don't get when I shoot with my tab or glove.
I guess it doesn't matter how the arrows look when they fly when I am shooting with this WINN Glove.  All I am using it for is to get stronger.

Winn made that release in relax form and called it the C12...they no longer make that version but if you can find a used one it more closely replicates the action of a finger release

I originally bought that version.  You kept the trigger pulled back through the draw and anchor and when you were ready to shoot, you relaxed the finger and let the trigger go forward and it would release the arrow.  Pretty neat, but I felt that the trigger type that was in a gun would be better for me so I called them up and swapped it out, new for new.

I'd like to try one of the string type releases and those back tension type of releases that look like a piece of aluminum that's shaped to fit the grip with the hand closed.  The only problem is that those pieces of aluminum shaped to fit your hand are VERY EXPENSIVE.  I looked at Lancaster today and those things go from $150 to $250!  Heck, I've got a bow that didn't cost that much!

Any other suggestions?

A few years back someone posted about a release he made and used on his stick bows, I think his handle is Mudd.

I thought it was a great release and very easy to use for stick bows.

Really something. That looks very interesting. I'd like to try one.
I wonder where he got the wrist strap from?  It looks like it came off of a ball type release.
I wonder if you can buy just those wrist straps?  WINN sells replacement wrist harnesses, but I don't think that type would work as well.

 Back in 1985 I actually had my right hand cought in a log splitter and it severed my hand mid palm area because I was placing a log on the splitter when "my brother in law" pushed the lever and I was out of service doing anything for several years.I was Blessed to have it reattached and pinned together.
 I still draw with that hand today and I am able to release but I can't open my hand  completely.
 Now for some unknown reason I never wanted to shoot a crossbow even though at that time I could get a permit but wanted to shoot the vertical bow and needed a release aid.
 TSS had a release that had a strap and I could pull with my wrist and release the trigger with my thumb which just got broken in that splitter and I had movement.
 I then switched to one with a wood handle that would rotate and I could still use the thump release as the trigger.
 After lots of therapy I slowly worked my way back to using just a damacus style glove.
 I am not sure TSS still makes that style release but it was my favorite at the time and worked well.
 You could rotate 1t 360 degrees as well..

There is a tube video by Backyardboyer where he makes a release from an eye bolt.  Looks like it would hurt your release finger to me but may be worth a look.
