Airline approved TD recurve cases?
« on: October 17, 2007, 09:34:00 PM »
Hey y'all--I'd love to hear about how folks are flying with their TD recurves and arrows.  I've seen the 3Rivers tube cases, but I'd love something--perhaps in briefcase form--that carries arrows, too (Neet has a nice looking one, but it's not airline approved).

I'm flying home to the happy hunting ground in two weeks to show my compound-toting kin what the stick can do, but need to get it there in one piece.  Actually, I need to get it there in three pieces, but you know what I mean...

Thanks in advance for the tips!

Any airline approved take down shotgun case will do.  I just happened to take these pics last night for another thread...

What part of Iowa are you from/hunting?  I am in Iowa City at this moment.

Are you still allowed to pack them in your regular luggage? I used to wrap them in the middle of clothes bags. But the last hunting trip I was on was pre 9/11.

Yep, that is no problem.  You do not have to declare them like you do a firearm either.

Thanks, Steve.  Hadn't thought of that.  Can't tell from the picture...do the two foam layers meet?  Does your fletching get mashed?

BTW, I'm headed about 40 miles south of you

I have a couple layers out of this case...the fletchings are ok, just the limbs and riser have enough pressure on them to keep in place.

My old case, which I had pretty customized, could only take so much abuse from the travel.  The foam on that was touching and held the bow in cut out areas.  I had another that had arrow clips mounted on the top.  It is easier to throw an arrow tube in the top part of the duffle.

"Airline approved", = lockable hardcase and for bows, it dosn't even need to be locked.
The best way all around is to use the takedown softcase and pack it in the middle of your gearbag with clothing all around. I put my arrow cases at the bottom and the bow on top of them with padding on all sides. I use heavy hunting socks to put the riser and limbs in. My stuff has been all over the world on many trips with no problems this way. If I travel to a foreign country, I check out their customs regulations for archery equipment and print it out(most have no special regulations), some customs officers will ask for your "permit", I just had the print out and look them right in the eye and say "I don't need one, they are available or required", they always try to get rid of me fast!

Sergio,

It is a Boyt.  I believe they still make them.  Orvis has one similar.  I think when this one does finally give up, I will get one of the Cabela's versions--Cordura is a lot tougher than canvas.

On another note, a buddy stopped by today wtih the sweetest case I have ever seen.  It was an SKB--I will try to find it and post.  In it was his old beater Habu recurve and a brand spankin' new Carbon Cocobolo Vyperkhan!  The foam in the bottom was cut out for the limbs and riser and the top had slots for arrows in addition to cutouts for a quiver and other accesories.

The foam cutouts from Habu are different, but you get the idea.

On my trip to Africa I used a safari tuff soft td case and put that inside of my gear bag. I used pvc tubing cut to length with caps for my arrows and put that in the gear bag too, along with my broadhead box. Packed all my clothes around it. Never a problem. My wife's compound case on the other hand...thought I was gonna have to bribe the baggage check guy to get that back. I ended up grabbing it and walking away from him while he was distracted by another hunter collecting four or five compound cases.
