NYS Deer Virus
« on: October 18, 2007, 08:55:00 AM »
For those bowhunters in the Albany area, 2 Deer bowkilled have been tested positive for EHD Virus.

Epizootic Hemorrhgic Disease....This virus is transmitted through biting flies. The virus pose no problems to humans but the animals will appear sickly in the woods.

Whitetail symptoms include swollen tongue, eyelids, erosion of the dental pad and ulcers on the tongue along with a few other hemmoraging problem areas like the heart, lung and intestine.

Bowhunters should wear rubber gloves for field dressing and thoroughly wash knives and any of your body parts that come in contact with the animal through urine, tissue, blood etc...

Hopefully this virus won't have a long term impact on the herds.

Thanks Joe!!!!!

I've never used rubber gloves while dressing out deer before, but I've started carrying them with me now.
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

About 15 years ago Missouri's herd was hit hard by this disease. We had a drought going on back then which made things worse because the deer were congregating around what little water was available. The herd took a major hit in areas where numbers were highest.
The good news is they've rebounded back.

West Virginia is loosing a bunch to EHD right now.  The farmer that owns the property I hunt on has found 13 dead deer so far (not all on his property but in the same hollow) and has lost 2 cows.  However, it seems that the big kills are in more isolated areas with just a few deer being located, here and there, on a more widespread basis.
