Riser woods

Thinking about combining bocote and zebrawood in a riser for my new Holm-Made River Runner. Anybody use that combination? Any pics combining bocote with another exotic would also be of interest. Thanks guys!

Such things are subject to personal taste, but I think that those too woods wouldn't look good together.  Too busy.  JMO

I'm not a fan of bocote myself.......but I know Chad is really good when it comes to matching woods that go together......talk to him about your options. He has done Osage for me with Cocobolo and with Walnut.......I was very pleased!!

Here's a Bocote riser with Zebra limbs with blind limb mounts, and Zebra footing accents.

Keep something in mind... both the Bocote & Zebra darkens with age, but the Zebra turns more golden, and the bocote just gets darker. So the contrast between the two woods look better with age.

What combination of riser woods don't you have Keith?

I kind of like contrast between a highly figured wood like bocote and a less figured wood.  I think Che Chen or Bolivian Rosewood would look good.  Che Chen would match in color more though.

Agree with others. Too busy for me. Like Chad said a busy wood like bocote looks best with a less busy grained wood.

The busier the better for me. I love highly grained and crazy woods.
Kirk's one piece above is phenomenal.

Gnarly bocote with straighter grained zebrawood is absolutely killer!

With all the variations in color and wood grain within the same generic wood, it would seem you'd have to personally hand select the veneers to ensure a good match. I now tend to agree, a "less busy" grained wood selection would be safer and might even provide a better contrast with the bocote. A nice piece of coco would definitely provide an interesting color (and maybe even a wood grain) contrast. I'm going with coco if Chad can make it work. Thanks guys!

Why do I not see to many risers made of black walnut these days?

Just came to a decision! If coco works when Chad receives it in his shop, it's a go! If not, I am giving him artistic license to select a wood which he feels matches up nicely with the bocote.

Esp ...most walnut is not strong enough for a riser . Some use it as a veneer but it gets so dark under the glass you can hardly tell what it is.

Thank you Tim,  I personally love the looks of walnut.  I just have not seen many in the last 6-7 years.
