Stalker Riser
« on: February 13, 2016, 02:18:00 PM »
Guys,

Going to be placing an order for a new Stalker Wolverine FXT shortly. I am looking at duplicating the center finished riser in the below pic. Looks like bocote and ____? I thought cocobolo but did not look red enough, any ideas? Thanks!

I'm no expert but it looks like Wenge to me.

I'll bet South could tell you without a doubt what it is!

Good looking combo, though!

I have a wedge riser and it is much darker. I realize woods vary in more than grain, including color.

My first thought was Shedua.

Boy, those Stalkers have the most comfortable grip on any bow I've shot. If I were to get one I'd get it without the brass inserts showing on the face (inside) of the riser ends though. That's why I sold my Schleyer version.

If I am not mistaken for 2016 the brass inserts are no longer showing, I thought I read that either on the web site or new catalog.

Rosewood? Personally, I'd take that black and white ebony. Either way, you can't go wrong with one of South's bows. And Wolf, I think you're correct about the inserts no longer showing. My Wolverine shows them but doesn't bother me in the least when shooting because I don't see them. And boy, does it shoot.

I talked to South a couple yrs ago about covering up the brass.  At that time he was going to do it.  I Think now they are covered.

Several of you guys are right, that is wenge. And yes, the brass inserts are now covered. I have a few older risers floating around in my shop that I made over the years that I need to finish up, those will be the last of the handles with the inserts showing. Thanks for the guys that pushed me into changing, it does clean up the lines on the bow.

That's a good guess. Does appear to have a hint of brownish grain to it. Gabon ebony that I've seen tends to be jet black.

I don't want to hijack but I think the question has been answered
Any thoughts on the relative merits of the Wolverine  versus the coyote Stalkers ?
I just thought I would take advantage of a thread that already has the attention of some Stalker fans
Thanks
Tim

Seems like one is a dedicated recurve in the Wolverine and the Coyote mates to both a recurve and longbow limb. Both are good looking, I am ordering a Wolverine FXT shortly!
