If you had to choose: Dale Dye or Robertson Fatal Styk???
« on: February 15, 2016, 10:32:00 AM »
Alright guys, I have been bouncing around on a new recurve order for a while know and think I have narrowed it down to either a 58" Medicine point or a 58" Fatal Styk. I just really like the slim/ vertical riser design on these, the looks of the grip, and they both certainly have a good reputation.

From those of you that have handled both, I would like to hear you opinions/pros and cons on each of them in comparison to one another. Of course, if you have pictures I would like to see those as well.

I have not had a chance to shoot either, but am willing to order without so am not looking for "try them both and see for yourself."

I draw 27" which is why I would be ordering 58" and would most likely get Dale's short handle.

Thanks in advance for any help you all may be able to give!

I can't help you with regards to the performance comparison of these bows. Both are excellent performers.  Both have wide swell type grip that some prefer.  Much like an Asbel grip for Black Widows.  Just personal preference:  I like the feel of the Fatal Styk best.  If looks matters, I also like the lean tapering limbs of the Fatak Styk.  Both great bows.  Scott

Try and shoot both then decide. I don't think you can go wrong with either. To me there is just something awesome about a Dale Dye. I have shot both but that's me.

PM Sent. Top shelf bows on all counts. Both have the best grip in the business.

Good luck,
Kyle

I have had both, you will not be disappointed with either.  Both bowyers are exceptional craftsmen and are good to work with. In your case I'd choose the one that shoots best for.  I know Dick has a test program, I doubt that Dale has one.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

I have a couple of both.  You won't be disappointed with either.  If you are ordering one, Dick has a shorter wait time than Dale and he sometimes has stock bows the tight fit what you are looking for.

I have bought and or sold about 7 bows.  The only bow that I could not shoot was one that I  based on what other people said about it.

If you like to experiment and swap bows, go for it.  There is a cost tho.

The grip is the first thing I consider when buying a bow, then the other stuff comes into play.

I have shot both, you will not be disappointed with either & both bowyers are exceptional craftsmen. I've always liked the longer risers & longer sight windows

I currently have both, well close to both for comparison sake. I have a 60" Dale Dye and a 60" Vision Falcon. The Vision Falcon is the older version of the Fatal Styk though I doubt a lot changed but the name. They are both fantastic bows, but very different in my experience. The Dye is smoother to draw, but the Falcon seems to hit a bit harder. I have a medium grip on both and I feel like they could not be further apart! The Dye really, really fills your palm and has a very narrow throat. The Falcon has a nice swell but a thicker throat and is cut a bit closer to your hand. The Dye has a pretty heavily radius rider, while the Falcon is flatter. I feel like I get a much more consistent grip with the Dye, you almost have to try to grip it differently and when you do you will instantly notice you are off. Both shoot fantastic and are true works of art. I will likely never sell either if it means anything. One thing to consider is wait time. Dale is currently at a little over a year and he is getting up there in years. He is an old school businessman who calls and writes hand written letters. No website. You can buy a few different Fatal Styks right off their site.

Hope some of that helps, I too have a hard time with the "shoot it before you buy it" advice as I have never been able to do that with a trad bow. I'd spend more time trying to find one locally than I would waiting for some of the custom orders!

Thanks Wolf, great advice.

from the looks of those grips, the Dye seems to be more of my speed.

I am not as concerned as much about performance as i am a consistent gripped, quite shooting recurve.

keep it coming guys, and thanks for your time.

They are both flat out performers for sure and you cant go wrong with either! I'll add that for purely feel purposes if I was hunting whitetails out of a treestand I'd use the Dye. If I was hunting elk in the mountains I'd use the Robertson. Totally subjective but I just feel like they each suit a different purpose based on feel.

Sorry for the thread hijack but I've been drooling over Dale Dye bow pictures for a while now.  Just been putting off calling him....

Can anyone give me the quick skinny on what the different models Dale offers?  I just wanted to do a bit of research on my own so I was a bit more knowledgeable about his offerings before wasting his time.   Specifically, are there different models of 3 piece recurves he offers?

TIA for any help

PS Gary that picture is so beautiful.   Wood details?

As I understand it, he offers a take down and a one piece. The take down comes in two models...the Trails End (see my pics earlier in thread) and the Medicine Point. The Trails End is his standard model and the Medicine Point is the "luxury" model based on the pierce points design which are a wood working feat of engineering in itself!

Ive got one being built in May. I did get to visit Dale recently. A fine person and a true craftsman. Everything you have heard about his bows in correct. Give him a call he is a pleasure to talk with and he will send you his brocure, he does want a trace of your hand to form the riser. I ordered my bow last spring so the wait is about a year. His checkered grip is one of the best.
His phone # is (406)-363-2983

I have owned both, bought the Dye new and the Fatal Stick used. Both were nice bows. I didn't own them at the same time so kinda hard to compare, the Dye grip felt great and it was very quiet, seems the Fatal Stick was quicker.
