High gloss more expensive?

Just wondering why some bowyers charge extra for high gloss finishes? Thank you!

It takes a lot of extra work and time... the gloss finish shows the smallest of flaws that a matte or splatter finish will hide or cover...

Yes, I had one (Blacktail) I sent it back and had it refinished with satin finish.  It was too glossy.  Now I just take it and go- no worries about reflections.  Blacktail said their new satin finish was a tougher finish and after using it for a few years I think it is.

I had a Howard Hill Big Five a few years ago with a high gloss finish. It had black glass and a gaboon ebony handle,it was beautiful! You couldn't tell where the black glass and ebony started.it looked like the riser and belly glass where one piece of material.I normally like a satin finish but traded for this bow,I really liked the high gloss finish on this bow!

Other than the aesthetic appeal of wood under clear high gloss finish is there any other advantage over a satin or matte? I've read somewhere that it is sometimes Harder and better overall (despite the fact that scratches and dings are more evident). Is this so?

High gloss really shows off the bow's wood grain. Probably the best bow I ever ordered I had done gloss.

It was just too beautiful. I let it go because it didn't occur too me to have it refinished satin.

High gloss is a tougher finish by it's nature, but not enough to make any big difference IMO.  That's in reference to spirit and Water based finish's. When it comes to the epoxy type I don't know but suspect that the satin or matte are every bit as tough as the gloss.

You may be correct generally.  I don't  remember what finish Norm at Blacktail now uses, but he told me his new satin was much tougher than the old gloss.

A lot of folks use the gloss as base coats and satin as a final coat because the gloss is supposed to be harder.

Yep that it was we do and actually recommend to all our customers of Thunderbird if practical.  Does not always make since to buy both gloss and satin if just have one or two bows to spray.  Satin will Thunderbird alone will protect just fine.

Back to the orginal question from taxus_bacata. As stated mu more time consuming in every step to do a nigh gloss
