HH bug got me ... Part One!

Its not too cold out today so I am going to take the kids for a hike in the woods and just do some stump shooting I think.  If I am smart enough Ill take pictures.

The bigest disadvantage I found in shooting 3under is being locked in to shooting under the nock. Splt finger shooting allows placing the arrow nock over the string nock. "3under" doesn't permit speed shooting as effectively with a back quiver that John Shultz teaches in his video. It's not important enough to me to go back to "split fingers".

I only have 1 Hill style bow and as we know, "one does not a pattern make", but my NM Shelton doesn't seem to be at all picky as far as arrow flight. I've only shot wood through it, shoot split and run 2 nocking points. It has to be the bow as my form and release is terrible most the time.

68inch 55# Wesley special. It shoots like a dream and quiet as a church mouse. I have owned several other longbows before I found the one that I like. A lot of the longbows that I owned earlier were radical r/d. I just did not like them,I always thought I should just shoot a recurve. The Howard Hill Probley slings the arrow a little slower,but I can get a shot off faster with the Howard Hill,and it is defenitly quieter.

Brian, 3 under is only an observation as far as anything goes, I've never shot like that, not once.  I just see the difference in arrow flight and bow noise from those who do. I had a friend change it up when I was shooting with him, and he hadn't realized how much quieter split was. I don't doubt folks are real good with it.  

I've been speaking with Louis, and he's recently shot a couple of fired up deer, and I have too over the years.  I really think the deer ducking the arrow syndrome kind of goes away when the bow is so quiet.  The Texas crowd has a thread about just that. Those deer are skiddish and they are aiming almost at their feet....

I took my Schulz Granpa it for a day in the woods yesterday and brought along my first ever back of homemade woodies. It was well below freezing and I didn't see any deer bit a couple of grouse kept things interesting for the afternoon.

This is easily my most accurate bow and it packs a punch at 68 lbs so I suspect it will be travelling south with me  to the Hill Gang Hog Hunt.

The Granpa is all bamboo with myrtle riser - much like Dave Miller's split bamboo model. The nodes on the bamboo are left on and run up the back, it's very cool looking.

Mine is string follow and it has made me a convert. Very forgiving bow to shoot. I'm having my Expedition built the same as a result.

Went out and shot my new hoyt dorado with sky ilf limbs and compared it to my heavier Schulz. In the past you may recall that I have always shot the metal riser ILF bows better than anything else by far.

Not the case anymore!

I drilled 9x9 inch targets from 30+ yards fairly consistently... with the Schulz bow! It's far quieter and probably faster due to the greater draw weight.

I don't think I'll have the dorado long :-)

My boy told me today that we don't shoot in the rain, and it's too cold...oh well.  You had better luck Brian!  Made a couple strings though, one for the Shrewhill and one for the Whisper.

Kyle, glad to hear its coming together for you. Curves seem easier to shoot at first, but for hunting I always pick up a longbow. With some work in practice they are amazing to hunt with. I know there are those very talented archers that can kick butt in target archery too.  I noticed a lot of them don't compete though. It would be nice if they would take on the curve competitors.   I saw one crush even compound shooters.  You don't see that every day. He won the $ prize. Very humble guy.
