I've noticed the same thing Rossco. My bow is 57@29, it shoots a 70-75 fir with 125 at 31", a 2020 (74#) with 225g at 30.5" and a CX150 (67#)with 250g at 30.5".

The carbons are 1 step wierder than the aluminum in this aspect.

It has to do with how fast the arrow material can recover from paradox. Wood is the slowest, aluminum then carbon is the fastest. I've heard you can up the spine more on hardwood shafts VS cedar cause they are heavier and recover slower.

Also keep in mind how you are effecting the "center shot" of the bow going from a woody of 11/32 or 23/64 down to 5/16 or 19/64 on the aluminum.

And they said this is the simple archery.

I'm shooting 200gr up front on my 28.75" 1916 Legacys out of my Dave Johnson that's 54@ 28. Seems unusually high point weight for that arrow but the flight does not lie.

Shooting 49# spine poplar (from magnus) at 29" and 125gr Magnus 2 blades up front I have equally good flight.

Hard to figure, but that's where a good wood test kit has helped me. (magnus again  :)  )

Well, I've been remiss in posting pics of some additions to the stable so here they are.

Miller Old Tom - 63@28 stringfollow
Schulz American longbow - 65@28

Both are amazing shooters. The Schulz is exceptionally quick.

The Schulz is 68 and the Miller 66.

I love them both and have taken the bits I like from each and included them in the design for my Expedition.

The size of the limb tips is truly amazing on the Schulz - and it really spits an arrow. It's a masterpiece. I polished and waxed the wood this week and after the hog hunt I'm gonna re- do the handle wrap.

Very nice - bet it slings an arrow. The thing I love about these bows is they are so 'standard' looking for a custom - it's not til you shoot it that you see just how well crafted and designed they are.... I'm hoping the Expedition is a looker as well as a shooter though... Lol

Rossco you will be very happy with your expedition, I have four of Davids bows with another in the works. His exppedition is his top of the line in looks and perfornance. I have his Hawk 66" and 48lbs at 26" and its the quickest longbow I own and stable as can be with no handshock. David workmanship and skill is as good as it gets hes a real sticler on limb timing and dead center string alignment and a perfectionist at his craft with decades of experience.

@eric - it's got about 3/4 inch of backset. Very gentle in the hand though, comparable to a stringfollow in feel.

@ Ron - I can't wait! David firmed up my specs last week and says he's on schedule for a Mrch delivery. I went with the new carbon backing - in part to help him out with easily sourced materials and also because John Immordino says it dramatically improves an already impecable bow.

Ross,
You will for sure enjoy your new Expedition. If it is like mine, it will be harder hitting, flatter shooting, and a good deal faster than your Old Tom. The Old Tom will be, on the other hand, a lot smoother, especially since you have string follow.
They will be completely different.
Enjoy your harem!

Ross in answer to the dynamic spine differences between wood and aluminum. The wood arrow recovers slower than the aluminum and the same is true for carbon the aluminum is slower than carbon. When geetting the right arrow out of any bow it is the arrow recovery you are trying to get perfected so that you achieve the best combination of arrow recovery, speed, low noise and shootability, with hootability being most important with a degree of forgivness in your shooting! By the way I have a 70#68"at28 Schults I would like someting a few pounds lighter! Have fun shooting! Jacques

A friend of mine is into building bows, and we just finished getting ready for a Hill style bow glue up. He made the form, and got some tools, and we ground laminations and risers/etc this weekend.  It's a fun process, but a lot more goes into it than I knew.  I am looking forward to finishing the bow's dimensions/tiller.  Should be a real learning experience. This one will be a boo core with redwood burl veneers(picked up at kzoo) under clear glass.  I'm thinking about adding some dark tip overlays.

How does one go about acquiring a Schulz bow?  Looking for a 68 inch 70-75 lb.

Just thought  I'd ask
