HH bug got me ... Part One!

Brianlocal3. Good looking reverse handle.  They look weird to me to but if I were to get one that is the style that looks best to me.  I like the reverse handles that look like a normal Hill style, just backwards.  It's when the bowyer tries to blend the reverse handle in by sanding it of and rounding the handle it starts to look really screwed up to ME (no offense to you guys that have the screwed up looking type bow I am describing!).  I have always been interested in a reverse handle as in concept it would seem to be the better design between the two.

Hey Bud, if you like Hill bows, you have to spend a little time with one.  Same limb profile but quieter, smoother, and more accurate because the torque is gone. I can shoot them with gloves even.  At the bunny stomp here in MI I was shooting one, and had many comments that it was the quietest bow they never heard.  

I've got a T/D coming from Turay in the next week or two. I think he's about done!     :D

Typical 2, you impress me every time you post one of your bows. You do a great job.

Just to give an update to my fellow straight stick shooters. The Misty Dawn was in top shape tonight and brought in second place in the 3d tournent. I shot a 347, as did Kurt. First place shot a 352.  First was shooting a 3pc ILF longbow and kurt shoots his ever faithful Hummingbird hybrid. The straightlimbed bows can hang with the best of them!!!!

I'm afraid if I shoot one I might want one and then give in. Looks like some recurves I've seen strung backwards...just wrong, wrong, wrong...but those that have shot them have good reports about'em. You never know.

Brazos, usually the reverse handle is rounded with a flat belly.  It's really comfy, and the flat belly again helps reduce torque. I don't typically torque a longbow, but there are a ton of guys who do. My dad shoots only the reverse handle bows because he has crappy joints and strength issues from work, so he can grab it and strangle it, without a problem with arrow flight and he feels like he is in control.

BTW:  BRIAN, the back of that reverse handle bow is SICK!  That is one great looking bow!!

How do you think you shoot it compared to the std Hill style??  I think as people spend time with them, they really start to grow on you.  I'm building one today with Typical2.  He got me started building, used to tie flies together, just a natural progression to build our own stuff I guess!

Thanks bud. And good on ya fr learning to build them. And by the looks of tyoicals bows you have a good instructor.  

I have not got to spend slot of time with it yet, mosty just 15-18 yds and it's shooting really good.  At this point I cannot say how I shoot it compared to my others, but I'm shooting it good. It just felt natural. The only arrows I have now that fly well from it are some 2018s and they are comming in sh 12 GPP which is significantly heavier than I like to shoot. I'm going to sacrifice some of my 500s that I have tuned up for the misty dawn and get them tuned in. I like 8.5-10 GPP Max

Im going to change the direction of the thread for a second here.

I ask the following question on this thread because it seems the shooters of American Longbows (myself included) have a more relaxed outlook on this sport of archery. What I mean by that is we seem to like things on the simpler side.  

While tuning up new arrows or a new bow and arrow combo, how many bareshaft and or paper tune?  How do you go about it?

I ask because if I try to bareshaft tune any of the Hill styles I have owned I always get weak grouping or completely off the target, but I can shoot my fletched arrows in groups all day long. I get great flight out to about 60 yards. Broadheads fly good to. So I leave it at that.

Good post Brian, i ahve not had the kind of iisues you have had, only my arrows may fly a bit knock high is all.  I look forward to reading others posts.

Brian,  I use the broadhead I intend to shoot, or field point of the right grain weight if no broadheads will be used, and start trimming and shooting the finished arrows until my broadheads are shooting perfectly in tight groups in the bull.  I trim and shoot 3 arrows at a time, 1 broadhead.  I can see from the flight of the arrow if they are too long.  Broadheads magnify arrow flight issues. I shoot 3 broadheads at different spots when I am close to finish up the fine tuning.

That is real close to how "tune" my bows. Ill shoot my FP and trim till i like flight. Then comes the broad heads and I do the same with them. After they are flying right my BH and FP arrows are shooting together.

I'm with Brian. If I'm getting good flight with field points I switch to a broadhead an I'm usually just about there. I found bareshafting with the Hill bows to be an exercise in frustration...
