trapezoid/trapezoidal shaped in limb tiller. belly usually 1/8" or slightly more narrow than back.

 

string follow....the limbs bend towards belly, or towards the string side, when not under tension.

for me it translates into smoother release and a reduction in handshock. ( I feel none with my Dave Johnson backset LB) Some say they (SF bows) are more forgiving to bad releases and form. I shoot so bad I can't tell. As you draw a SF bow the increase in weight is smooth. In backset it seems to be felt earlier in the draw in feeling the weight increase.

Anyone else???

The Northern Mist Shelton (SF) I have is very smooth drawing and the hand shock is essentially non-existent. I also have a Northern Mist Classic that shoots most-excellently as well, but it does have a different feel than the Shelton.

An important factor in perceived hand shock is how the bow "fits" your shooting style - the grip, how your shooting form accommodates a slightly bent elbow, your release, etc.

I have *always* recommended shooting a bow before one buys since "the grip"  on a bow is such a personal thing....

You will get more specific sugestions if you give the specifics of you and any bow you are thinking about getting. Remember that a straight grip bow will tend for most shooters to give a bit of a bend in the bow arm which will shorten your draw. I am one that believes if you try to force an unnaturally long draw with a straight gripped bow your accuracy will suffer.  As far as which bow draws smoother, it is all about where the bow picks it poundage up at. I prefer bows that have less build up at the end of the draw no matter what the shape of the limbs are. If one bow has a bit more hand shock than another, that does not rule out the bow that may have more handshock.  Many bows with a bit of thump are great shooters and with some form adaptions the effects of some hand shock tends to go away.

Interesting thing.  I have a string follow bow and love it.  However I have been wondering about a back set Hill and how it would be different.  I know each design has its plusses and minuses as there is no perfect bow.

I love both designs. The SF Big 5 I have throws a good cast, but the lesser poundage (by just a few pounds) backset Dave Johnson seems to throw arrows flatter and faster.

Pavan,I have been a recurve guy for along time now, the past couple of years,(since I found Tradgang)I have been trying different types of bows,I have a b/w recurve I had made in 1995 and still love it today,I have had RER"s,Fox l/b,3 Big Jim Buff's, I just got a Stalker coyote with l/b limbs it's awesome. With the recurve grip I have a 30in draw,and have been doing my homework about hill style bows,as far as gripping drawing,and bow arm, however I have never shot one.There is a Echo,in stock that is 68in and 51@28 not to heavy to develop good form,I'm guessing I will have around 28-29in draw with a slight dished grip. And thank you guys for all your help!Burt

Stingfollow is where it's at for me. Don't notice any difference in speed (with a well made one) and it helps keep your arrows on target when your shot isn't as perfect as it should be.

Ross that is very cool, David has had my Expedition in and out of the form several times already.  I am hoping to get it by the end of the month, 68" straight 65#@27" black glass on belly slight dish handle!  I may have to place an order for the Hawk next.....

Howdy Burt, my experience of going from a high wrist recurve to a low wrist longbow was about what you described. My draw dropped 1.5" and I don't think that is unusual. I'd bet a 68" bow would do just fine for you.

Good job I the 7lakes. mike is a great guy to talk to and deal with, my son Max shoots on of his bows and they are fantastic.  What specs are you going with?
