HH bug got me ... Part One!

Finishing this back quiver today. My wife just found a strap of leather for me to use as a strap.
Not sure what the leather is but it is really nice, not sure if it will be really nice for the back quiver but it is what I had in stock and I was determined to use material I already had on the shelf.

Arrows are 23/64 tapered to 5/16 ceder. 640gn with a 160gn point. Working on a simple crest today. All six are between 64# and 67# spine and they really work great out of my 50#@30" Echo.
I will post some finished pics later.

I hate locators on Hill bows and know some others do also,so here's an easy fix.

Hello Hill brothers! I will soon be the proud owner of another beautiful Hill bow. Been a while since I was here and had one to share. Some of you may remember the nice little collection I had but, hard times and shoulder issues forced the sale of them and now it's time to get back in the game.

A great tradganger has helped me and though the bow isn't new, it will be a keeper for its uniqueness. I'll post it when it arrives.

Thanks guys. The bow is pushing the weight limit for me at 49# @ 28" but, I think Craig can reduce it for me. It is a 69" Red Hawk and a real beauty from the pics I've seen of it! Can't wait!   :D

Got this beauty in a trade a little while ago.Just changed the grip from a locator to straight and started shooting her. 68" 70#@28"(about 64-65# at my draw)
Pete George Timberline "Safari". Bamboo under brown glass back and belly.Really happy to add it to my collection.  :D

I wrecked my ankle the begining of this week,so I could only take about 15 minutes of hobbling back and forth from the target,but she was putting them right where I was pointing them.

Do you have a 'before' pick with regards to the grip modification?

Also, you're shooting the heavier weight bows. I really enjoy them myself but ice noticed that since switching to a anchor and hold type style I've had to shed a few pounds. Are using the Hill style 'touch and go' anchor?

Nice shooting Nick, I have a Wesley I changed from a locator grip to a straight grip. I love shooting it now. It's a beat up, banged up bow and I think I'm about the fourth owner, but she sure shoots nice. Looks like you did a better job on yours. I didn't get that fussy on that old beater of mine.

Yep,pretty much hit anchor and shoot. I come down onto my spot and as soon as it looks good,it's on it's way.I've been shooting the same way for 25+ years,bows from 48-90#

Rossco's question about Howard's "Touch and go anchor" got me thinking about Howard's famous quote that goes something like " decide right now if you want to target shoot or hunt,because they're totaly different"
I know alot of guys take that to mean that Howard shot instinctive to hunt but used his "split vision" method to target shoot.

 I don't see it that way.I think Howard was talking about the speed and stance of the shot process. A target shooter has the upright stance and holds(in some cases quite a long time)at anchor.Probably not the best method for flying,running or charging game.

I think Howard was just able to get on his secondary spot very fast.I can get onto my secondary spot pretty quick and I'm VERY far from being a Howard Hill.And it's not a measured distance to the secondary spot,like a gap shooter.It's just a familiar sight picture from alot of practice.After alot of practice,you can recognise the right site picture for each shot pretty quickly. If you watch some of Howard's trick shot films,you can see him pacing off before he takes the shot.In those instances,I'd bet he knew exactly where the tip of his arrow had to be at that yardage,a gap shot

I just don't think he would abandon a system(Split vision) that worked so well for him just because now he was hunting.Doesn't make sense to me??? He also said that anyone could miss the first shot,but there was no excuse for missing a second shot and you could adjust your hold to make the second shot.Doesn't sound like an instinctive shot to me.

Byron Ferguson seems to do pretty well using his "Become the arrow" system which is pretty much the same as Howard's "Split Vision"

when I start shooting without considering my secondary aiming, I find that my form gets sloppy. Really, there is no reason that checking your aiming should take anymore time, it all happens in the drawing process.  For me it is all about vision control and smooth form. When the focus is on, it is easier to see where your arrow is pointing without looking at it.

I use the split vision style of shooting.  I find it like everything else regarding form.  The more you do it the more automatic it becomes.
