HH bug got me ... Part One!

I too have been bitten by the highly contagious HH bug! however, i am having trouble finding a used 68” 50#.
I have talked to Craig and he gave me some price quotes on “the one” although, not yet owning or shooting a Hill there are a few things i am not sure about, one being weight. so i figure I would try to find a used 68” 50# shoot it until the cows come home, learn what i like and anything i might change then get on the horn with Craig and put an order in for “the one”.

Your arrows will be the same length, but yes the power stroke is changed somewhat as the limbs are closer to your wrist. As long as you shorten the bow accordingly you ahould be able to maintain the same draw weight and get comperable performance.

Hill archery surprised me a couple months ago.  I have a couple custom Hill bows and ordered a Redman.  I ordered 45# and 68".  I asked for the standard adult grip because I am a whimp and didn't want another bow over 50#..lol. When it showed up, the grip was a different "standard"!!! I love the teardrop shaped grip on the previous "standard" straight grip bow I received from him and now...NO Teardrop. Kind of just an oval.  I still can shoot it and like it, but I found that the teardrop really fits perfect every time without thought.  The new standard grip doesn't have that same feel.  I still shoot it well and don't hate it, but I was disappointed that they didn't tell me that they changed the grips.

you're right about the racetrack oval grip now popular....you can grip it a little off-center, and the round belly feels the same, kinda like gripping a pipe....  with a teardrop grip, the narrower belly side of the grip gives a more positive feel as the grip settles along your palm lifeline.  Not the old hatchet head style handles,  just a nice teardrop...  IMO the only way to go...lol.

Craig reworked my Redman to give it the teardrop shape which I too really like.  It came too round for my liking.  Now I make sure to discuss in detail just how I want the grip, how deep, total circumference, etc. It seems there is far more variance possible in longbow grips than recurves.

I love my Hills, but I am now waiting for the bow I bought from Rob, his spot waiting for a Miller longbow.

The catch, I changed the order to a split bamboo longbow instead of the Old Tom.

I don't know if anyone has seen/shot these but they are a work of art, and I am looking forward to shooting and displaying it. It is like having a little piece of history without buying a schultz for $1000

I am eager to see it and hear from you about your experience.  I pondered that one for a bit.

But, aside from my HH Half Breed, I now have a Cumberland on order and will hold off on all other purchases in my wait for a Sunset Hill.  Those three ladies will undoubtedly give me a ton of pleasure.    :D

Tony, sounds like you saw them in Kalamazoo too...pretty cool. I was happy with the Old Tom, but just asked Miller and he said no problem as he hadn't made anything yet. I had to add $ to make up the difference, but I decided that I had enough straight up Hills..for now..and decided that it would be cool to try a more primitive Hill style bow on for size.

Being an informed buyer will ensure that you get the product you want.  It has been my experience that bowyers want to spend time answering your questions to ensure that you absolutely love their final product.  A totally satisified customer is the bowyers ultimate endorsement.

Bowyers like Craig and Jason are wonderful to deal with and their workmanship is above reproach.

Both have always been more than willing to answer any and all questions.

They could most likely spend more time building if folks like me wouldn't call so often...lol
