Of all the active Hill style bowyers out there, I don't think there is a bad one in the bunch. All of them are more than willing to make sure you are happy with your bow.

You know, really, I don't think I've heard too many complaints about any of the bowyers. I know there were a few guys that got way behind on orders before and garnished a few kicks, but overall, they seem to be good guys. All of them I've ever had dealings with are anyway.

Hey Gerald,
The one you shot that you liked so much was my Half Breed, Yew lams over bamboo cores. The Cheetah was the only 70" you shot, with the juniper lams.
I just don't think I can part with my Half Breed right now, I really, really like it.

This is the Wesley I traded for the other day. I'll post a few pics later.
Still hoping to make it to the shoot tomorrow, you gonna show off that Big 5?

Hi folks. I've been following this thread and I don't think I've ever seen one go this long - ever! Very Cool!!

I can't say I'm ready to order a new one....I've come close but I can't justify it right now.

I guess the other thing is I can't decide which model to chose. Is there any real difference in how the different models shoot?
I don't see clear glass in my Hill catalog, but I guess I'd have to ask for the option huh.

Kinda thinking on either a Redman or Halfbreed.
Any comments?

hill style american flatbows are quite different from any other wood/glass hybrid or recurve bow, mostly in terms of draw length versus bow length, and how the bow reacts on release. other than that, opinions vary wildly as to which hill model is "best". personally, it doesn't much matter in terms of function - choose one that aesthetically makes you feel happiest. DO pay attention to draw length versus bow length - this is very important!

Clear glass is definitely an option; quite possibly the most common / popular option, too.

As Rob said, go for the one you fancy the most, but don't cut any corners with length.

the only other advice to offer on a craig hill is the handle shape - be sure of what you want and be specific about it to craig/jason when ordering.

oh yes, limb set, too. backset, straight or belly set (string follow) - each adds a character to the way the bow draws and releases and spits out an arrow.

It is soooo much fun experimenting to find the one you like the best.

I've owned nothing but Hills for 5 years now, and I have learned an enormous amount from this thread in the last 2 months. I just want to thank all the folks who have participated in it and shared there thoughts, photos, and wisdom. NOW I'M REALLY HOOKED!

I think we are always learning even with these bows that started all the way back with Howard.

I can shoot a variety of grips and really like several of them.

If I ever settle on just one grip you folks will be the 1st to know.

If I see a Hill or Hill style that is worth the price(also known as I can't afford to pass this one up!"...lol I know I can shoot it no matter which grip it has.

tembo in da house ... 70", caramelized boo under clear glass, string follow, paduak riser, laced grip, plain limb tips. labeled as 47@28, my easton digital scale repeatedly averages 51.4# @ 28" and 54.1# @ 29". it pays to order a lower draw weight - i figured it would be 50# @ 28".

i like craig's version of string follow. feels smooth on both the draw and release ... noticeably smoother on the release, to me, over the straight or backset hills.

backset (or "reflexed limb ends") is purported to smooth out the release with less "hand shock" and make for a somewhat faster arrow.

string follow (or "belly set") is purported to make for a smoother release but perhaps a somewhat lowered arrow speed.

straight limbs are the opposite of the first two.
