HH bug got me ... Part One!

Rats!

Two guys have a bait set up on the same big ridge I am on. That means I need to move to a different area.

Darn, things were looking pretty good there, but the right thing to do is let those guys have their fun without interference, and so begins the hunt for another good bear spot. It's not as easy as it sounds, and it burns up time I had planned to be actually hunting. Oh well, that's the way it goes.

Bear hunting is never easy, but it sure is fun sometimes!

WooooHooo!, I finally got my Hill Panther, 70" 62@ 28. Bubinga riser, cedar lams under clear glass. Ive found that the 70" sure makes for a smoooooth shooter. I thought that wth  [/url] [/IMG]  a new bow, you need new shafts, so i whipped up some Douglas Firs. I wasnt sure what the Panther was gonna like so i made up 60-65s
well it turned out to be the perfect choice, they fly clean straight and true.

awsome bow! im curious, are these bows as good as everyome makes em sound? i tried a heavy weight one and i was way overbowed, yall have me dreaming of a 68" 50 lb hill style bow! i gotta try it ! keep it up! great thread ! <>< chuck

I like my Hill style grips to be slightly dished. I've tried them all to come to that conclusion. Highly personal.


As someone said earlier go with a straight grip first and the others can be made from that if you want.

Need some help from you Hill fellows.  I have a Halfbreed that is 54lbs at my 27" draw and I am having a hard time gettin good arrow flight.  Can't seem to find the right combo.  I shoot wood arrows and 160grn points.
Any suggestions would be great.

We need more info, do you nock 1/8" up with your arrow  above, do you shoot split, are you releasing at 27", are you keeping your grip low, are you pulling with your ring finger as much as your index, what is you brace height, what spines have you tried, etc. I would start with 50-55s cut to 27.5" and start with the brace at the maximum range suggested and go for a hard release..

I do release at 27" from what I can tell. Checked by a marked arrow and a friend. Split finger and brace height is set at 6".  I have tried 28" bop 55-60, 60-65 and 65-70. I heal the bow and have watched rewatched and watched again Hittin em Like Howard Hill to get my Hill form down.  Never had issues before but this bow is given me fits.

Thats a little low for the brace height. Start at 6 1/4 and move up acouple of twist till you find the sweet spot. At least thats how I do it. Brace height will affect arrow flight. My Hill shoots best at 6 1/2. based on how I shoot. My Hill is 50# at 27" I cut my arrows 28" bop and I shoot 55/60 with a 160gr. point. I like straight grips.

My Hills all like 7" brace height. Your bow weight may be heavier than marked as well requiring a stiffer spine than expected--all my Hills are heavier than marked....had one 6# heavy!  I need to set my nock point on the string so that it is 5/8" above square. Lower than that and I get crappy flight.

FWIW...

All my bows shoot well around 5 7/8 - 6" BH and nocked 3/16 over 90*.  I do nock above the nocking point, which I believe helps in good arrow flight with a Hillstyle longbow.  All the Schulz longbows I've had shoot well with low 6" BH also and the one Big 5 I had shot well at 6 1/4".  Each of us is different and you will have to find out for yourself what shoots well for you, but it is my opinion that a high BH and high nock point are hiding flaws in the bow as far as tiller and timing.

if you are shooting 27" draw and 28" bop, then your arrows are actually 29" long which makes them 5# lighter than spined.  Add a 160 gr head and now your arrows are 10# lighter than spined.  So that means you need a 65# spine shaft minimum for your bow and if you erred 5# stiffer than that it won't hurt. That is if your bow is indeed 54# as marked.  Try nocking the arrow above the nocking point also.
