Well I gave up on the Hill Style shooting today.  I gave it 6 good months and it just would not jell worth a dang.  One day great and the next all over the place, usually high.  It was frustrating because I demand great accuracy as I achieve with my recurve.  I have only shot one bow  this whole time and am bound and determined to master it.
During the middle of my shooting session I reverted to the Asbell style and instantly saucer sized groups for about 20 shots.  It just gave me a more stable bow arm.  Its still a swing draw just with a more open stance.  I guess I should have started out that way and would be way further along.

Howard Hill wrote (I don't remember where), "never be so in love with an idea that you overlook something better".

In the end the Hill style may be as much philosophy as discipline.

Charlie..that quote was in "hunting the hard way".  It kinda leaves the door open to customize the style to fit you.

Chris stay with it, it will pay off.  If you cannt get the swing "method" down, just slow down and raise the arm and draw straight back.  I know not the "Howard" method, but had a buddy that couldn't get it down and once I had him do this was dead on.  For long time I struggled with the swing draw, till I slowed way down, and got to get it grooved in.  told long time ago in the corps, "Slow is Smooth, Smooth is fast".  Bob Wesley shooting school helped.

Chris -
Bring your longbow to Chester this weekend and look me up. We can shoot together and I can critique your form. Perhaps together we can get you on the right track.

OK, I thought it was about time for some longbow pics. I just finished this bow day before yesterday.
I call her "Stubby" because the tips are much shorter than I usually make them.

Brown glass back.

Coco Bola riser with elk handle wrap from an elk I shot.

White glass belly.

Sheep horn tips.

I used Lamboo lams on this one with 3 of them in the stack. That's a first for me. I've always used 4.

This bow has speed to burn and is a sweet shooter. It's 70" length is also a first as I always made them 66" or 68" in the past.

Been making string follow Hill style longbows for almost 30 years now and until recently didn't think anyone else had an interest in them.

I've found they don't give up anything to a backset bow except the perceived hand shock.
