Not to interupt but... Just bought my first hill bow off the classifieds. Does this mean I can join the club?  I'm pretty excited to shoot it. Unused to have a bbo with a straight grip and set back limbs but I never learned to grip it right. Now that I've been shooting longbows for about a year I have learned the importance of a heeled grip. Plus all the pics in this thread really helped my desire to try this style of bow.

Thanks for sharing!

I have some questions for the Hill experts.  I was given the bow below by my grandfather before he passed away.  He said it was made by Howard Hill.  He was not a bowhunter but was active in shooting field archery at the time Howard Hill was competing.  Is there any way to authenticate the bow?  Were there fakes or copies of Hill bows being made?  It is 2 lams of bamboo but what is the riser wood?  Would this bow be able to handle fastflight?  There are no identifiers or markings on the bow other than the Hill signature.  Was this common?  Thanks for any help and thanks to sticksnstones for uploading the pictures for me.

You should be able to edit that post and put a

[ I M G ] before each of those links, and a
[ / I M G ] at the end of each of them and it should work.

Don't put those spaces in there, if you put those in there they won't work.

Can't wait to see this!

It looks like your bow has woven glass. Here is something I found on the internet.

1949-1954 Dale Phillips- All the woven glass bows were made between 1952-53 by Dale

If I were you I would check with Craig Ekin at Howard Hill Archery. If it was made by Howard Hill it would bring a high dollar value. I know someone selling one for $1500.

Good luck I hope it was made by Howard Hill.

I just realized we didn't take a picture of the unstrung profile. If this is a Dale Phillips bow, it would be interesting that it actually has quite a bit of backset to it.

Would there be anyplace under that leather grip that Dale or Howard would have put down any markings?

Also, anyone have an idea about that riser wood? I know the pics aren't the best, but I was wondering if it could be deduced by year/bowyer.

Looks like the Hill bugs bit again. Had a few Hills years ago but might have to revisit.

Pat.....love those pics with arrow "tastefully" sticking out.  Nothing to be shamed into cleaning up about that pic.  I'd love to hunt where you do.  I'd be a dedicated hog hunter for sure.

Mr. Flingblade....that bow in all likelihood was made by one of the Stotler boys.  The best 'expert' available today to verify that bow isn't Craig, as he probably wasn't alive then,  but Bob Burton who has done extensive research on the subject and has multiple bows in his collection that look like yours.  His Hill Collectibles book is a beauty on this subject.
