50 years ago i used the K.I.S.S method...if the arra flew well i shot it  if it didn't i shot them into the air just to watch them fly untill i brook em.

now my grand kids shoot my culls into the air till they loose or break em.

Do those who don't use some "formal" tuning process at least check arrow flight with broadheads?

Shooting a bare shaft at a target is pretty simple.

Part of the question was about how things were in the 60s and 70s. I started shooting a modern hunting recurve in 1967 and by 1969 had shot wood, aluminum and Microflight shafts.

We didn't know much beyond spine charts for wood, fiberglass and aluminum. You picked an arrow based on a spine chart, put a 125 grain field point or Bear Razorhead on it and tested it out. Our arrows flew pretty good too.

Grains per pound, grains per inch, FOC, arrow weight, fletch size never entered the conversation or thoughts.

We usually had friends who shot bows or an archery club so you'd shoot other people's arrows and compare notes. That was in effect our internet.

Bladespeak:  I didn't say all, I said most.  I'm not criticizing the method.  It works.
I was just suggesting that folks who have been at this for half a century or so have probably internalized most of the data and can arrive at the correct arrow set up without bare shafting.

mgf: i only shot wood arras 50 years ago and still do...the only time i would shoot a wooden arrow at anything without fletch  is if i want to break it...
