Turkey time!
« on: March 10, 2016, 08:57:00 PM »
So this is the first year I'm going to go trad only on the thunder chickens and put down the 20ga. I have finally got a litt me time as the wife is away and am working on getting everything rigged up.

I stripped some arrows and put more "subtle" fletching on, added on one of Chads fine string trackers, and now trying to figure out what broadhead to roll with. I want to hear your thoughts!

Let's make this a turkey thread! Thanks guys.

Man I am soooo excited!!!  It's hard to beat hearing a turkey gobble rattle the woods.  That's an awesome setup.  Any of those heads will work.  I'm partial to interceptors myself, but have no experience with the others.  Good luck!

Shot birds with simmons and shot through 2 birds with the single bevel cutthroat heads they all die when you hit em right like anything but my personal preference for a great bloodtrail and getting the bird down quick it's simmons just my .02 cents

Any one of those broadheads you have will work fine. I will not turkey hunt without my string tracker. It really helps in recovery if the bird gets out of sight.

On another note; what size aluminum do you use to foot those FMJ's?

I will be chasing those gobblers with only my bow this year also. Will be using the Interceptors. I believe the ruffed grouse gets the "thunder chicken" moniker.

I heard a big Tom go off yesterday morning in the half dark when I was opening the barn door to get the truck out! Great way to start the work day. I'm using Simmons tree sharks this year! Love that set up you got

Bisch, those are 400 FMJ's and I believe those were 1913's.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

I really do love that Stickflinger. Brian makes one heck of a bow.

I think I am going to rig up the simmmons safari's. I have been shooting the Abowyers for a while for whitetails... Time for a change!

What draw weight are you using? I am recovering from shoulder surgery, so if I get to hunt at all, it will be with 40# draw max. I have always hunted with considerably heavier bows. I generally use Zwicky 2 blade heads for deer and have never shot at a turkey. I am trying to go to school on these turkey threads, so recommendations and details of hunting rigs are greatly appreciated. Especially the broadheads used. This will be my 20th year to hunt trad only, but it has almost been all deer hunting.

Turkey hunting is my Longbow favorite. 2018's .145 Eskimo heads,60" Centaur 51@28. Spring is my favored season anyway. Buds are blooming,Turkeys gobbling,Bass are biting,Sun is shining. Love it.   rat'

I just got a 40# bow for hunting out of blinds.  I was not getting very much penetration on my riehnhart target and was a little worried.  Went over to my buddy's house and shot one of his farm birds that he was planning on butchering any way.  Used a 3 blade broad head, and got great penetration.  I am not worried about that any more.

I think those 3 blade heads you have there will do the job nicely.  For me I have to go with my 2 blade heads as that is what I get the sharpest.  Provides me with more confidence I guess.

Beautiful bow too.  Keep us posted.

Thanks guys!

I also have trouble getting 3 blades as sharp as I want and actually working on it now! I can get two blades crazy sharp but just can't get these 3 blades where I want them...
