Youth bows

Looking at getting my son a new bow and was wondering who all makes a nice youth bow ? My son is almost nine years old and I was thinking something around 15-20#s maybe does that sound about right for his age ?

would 15 pounds be about right for n 8-9 year old ?

Every child is different, but based on a few years of teaching 4H archery, I like 15 pounds.  Just like with adults, better to be a little light instead of too heavy.  Easton Jazz 1616's shoot great.

My daughter loves her St. Joe River bow. I really can't say enough about them. In the MLA, I spend a lot of time with the 11# St. Joes and the Otters which are the next size up and they are fantastic.

The colors really get the kids excited to shoot too.

If at all possible let him try out some bowsbefore you order. Kids upper body strength varies greatly. When my son was nine he could have drawn a 15lb bow past his ear with one pinky, and he didn't weigh 75 pounds soaking wet. He started with a 25#@24" black rhino.

Another for St Joe River bows. I have bought several for nieces and nephews and they love them. They offer a great trade in program for when they outgrow the bows. Starting prices are very reasonable for a custom kids bow. Colors are amazing when you can get purples and pinks and greens the kids will be amazed with them

Bears paw bows. Neal makes a great youth bow. The best thing is I can draw it back to 28" if I ever need a small blind bow.     My daughter is 9 and like the above poster she would be able to pull 15lbs past her ear. I think she is pulling about 22-25 I think. Cannot quite remember. She will be able to shoot this bow for a long time. I also bought her a 4 arrow thunderhorn quiver and put it on the Bow.

You can't go wrong with a Maddog Pup longbow.

Mike glued me up a Pup blank and my daughter (who was 6 at the time) and I finished it.  Great little bow! Although she has outgrown it and lost interest in archery these days, it will will always hang on my rack.

Samick Polaris takedown bow 62"  

Samick makes several 3-piece takedown bows with amo lengths of 48, 54", 58", 62"  ("little fox" to "Polaris"), with draw weights from under 15# to over 35#.

Not sure how tall he is, but one of them would be good quality, and flexible to grow with him.  I'm not sure of the riser lengths for those models.  They be be all the same, or there may be a smaller riser for the 48" version.  My wife is 5" tall and she likes to shoot the 62" version with 24# limbs.  She just likes plunking arrows in the back yard.

Her 62" Polaris is a nice bow.  About $115.  Other shorter Samick models are about $10 less.  I think it's a lot of bow for the money. Kind of "kid proof" too.  Good enough to shoot through the teen years and into adulthood (with 62" Polaris).  "Inexpensive" and well-made, not "cheap" quality.
