Fir shafts

I have been using poc and spruce shafts I like them fine. I was thinking about getting some fir shafts to try something new. Yall guy's like fir or not? I know they are suppose to be a little heavier

The only thing I've shot in over 25 years. Used to make my own doug fir shafts, but now I get them from Surewood.

I make almost all of the arrows I sell out of Surewood Shafts Douglas fir. All my own arrows too. Best all around arrow there is.

Douglas Fir has been my favorite arrow wood for many years, even before Surewood.  It is a very snappy wood and recovers very quickly.  I like the way it shoots.  DF tends to be heavier than POC and Sitka Spruce, but it also varies quite a bit, 150+ grains, so you can get DF in pretty much any weight range you want.  It's pretty tough, but when it breaks it generally comes apart so you know its broke.  Good stuff.

Ive shot many different types of wood arrows and I believe doug firs are the best...

I am on my first dozen.  Since they came from Surewood, I don't know if the very high quality is just due to their care in selection and processing or normal of most Douglas Fir.  I did get the premium grade in tapered and they are the best wood shafts I've seen...and I've been shooting various woods for 45 years.  Out of the dozen, I only had to slightly straighten two...the other ten spun true with no straightening required. I haven't had a dozen POC ever that I didn't have to straighten most of them. Great tight grain.  Only thing I miss is the smell of cedar... but I'll get over it!    Also, 10 of the 12 were within 2 grains.

Oh...and they fly great too.

Net, I WILL be ordering more.

The only reason I shot POC was that I live only 10 miles from Rose City Archery. I finally pulled the pin and got some from surewood and couldn't be happier.

After shooting POC, Sitka Spruce, Lodgepole Pine, HIckory, Ash, Maple.....I settled on Douglas Fir back in 90s.  I get mine now from Surewood and could not be more pleased.  I still try a few others every now and then like Red Balau from Forrester or some bamboo for selfbows...but my go to arrow wood is Douglas Fir...gives me best of weight, strength, straightness, durability and just good looking with some stain on them.

POC, Spruce,  Surewood.

I like the durability and weight of Surewoods.
I do like Sitka Spruce as well but in lighter weights.

I prefer Doug Fir because it's just plain stronger than cedar or spruce, and I do a lot of stump shooting, in rough woods.
I also prefer the way it flies over spruce - I guess that's the quicker recovery rate. Seems to stay straight better than the other shafts,too.

The best way is probably a sander and guide. That said - I don't have that set up yet, and do OK with hand held tapers... but go really light (don't push the shaft in, peel it slowly), and check the centering on my spin tester. Sand down high spots if necessary.
