I have a story
« on: October 20, 2007, 11:32:00 AM »
Been bow hunting for 25 years only two with trad and i have never shot a deer while on the ground. This spring i bought a DB blind, used it for turkey and decided to hunt deer from it. I have yet to go into a tree stand this season because i thought if I don't hunt from the blind seriously I will never get one from the ground.I had some close calls this past week but could not close the deal. This morning the wind was just right to hunt my favorite spot I made up to set the blind at. In all my locations I have some pine or hemlock branches to brush in the blind. I went in  this morning and was set up before shooting time, The nice thing about a blind is that i bring more snacks and coffee with me then i ever did before.  Well i settled in and poured a cup of hot coffee, I was enjoying that and looking out into the morning woods, after awhile i finished up the coffee and put the cup away.

Well then it was now good and light in the woods i sat back and prepared for the long sit. Suddenly i heard a stick break to my left, when i looked over i see this buck walking up to a scrape, there are many scattered out in this area also it is loaded with oak trees so the deer have been hitting this spot heavy. At this point he is well in range but I'm waiting for him to get good and close, that's how i like em. He takes a few more steps and stops just about broadside at nine yards, let me say he is no giant but from that range and from on the ground, his body looks plenty big enough for me to shoot. The amazing thing is that at this point I'm pretty calm, it's at that point i say to my self, YOU PICK A SPOT DAMM IT! I draw back pick my spot, then the arrow seems to release all on it's own!

This man is a sadist!   What?  Do they charge by the word per post here or is it that he's paid by the number of post?!  :^)

I watch the arrow in it's short flight then disappear right were i was looking. Let me add at this point that I'm shooting my 64" Howard Hill Redman 47# @27" with a 5/16 dia. Howard Hill arrow topped off with a vintage Zwickey black diamond head. I watch the buck run for about 75 yards and then he just vanishes without a sound. I say to myself that i will not leave the blind for one hour. I nock another arrow and try to calm my nerves, after about fifteen minuets i look out and see what looks like a deer standing 100 yards away.

Sone Knife... the only reason I can forgive this suspense is that you mentioned the Hill Redman...

Turns out to be a doe, wait a minuet four does. They begin to work there way to me as they feed on the acorns that are still falling. What seems like forever they finally come into range, by this time i am shook after all that has happened so far. I draw my bow for a second time this morning pick a spot and release only to watch my arrow go over her back. No big deal no one hurt. I look at the time and it has been one hour since i shot the buck, i get out of the blind and go over to retrieve the arrow that missed the doe.

Now it is time to see the aftermath of the buck encounter, I know exactly were i last saw the buck. I don't even look for blood at this point I'm on a mission to get to the point were he was last. At 80 yards from the blind and 25 years of bow hunting and only two years of traditional, i see my first deer that i took from the ground laying there. He is no giant but to me he is the greatest deer i have ever shot with a bow. I have not shot any of my other bows since the end of may just my redman just to get ready for this moment. I'm one happy camper or should i say Traditional bow hunter. Here is a pic of my trophy.

Great hunt and great storytelling.   With your permission, I'll put that up on the Hill site's game taken page....
