Frankly Pete as badly managed as the elk herd is here you may be better off not drawing. Check out Colorado otc permits

Well BenBow, I've been hunting Colorado mostly OTC for 20 years and have never seen the number or quality of elk I saw last Sept. in NM.  I'd go back in a heartbeat. Odds are terrible but I'll continue to try.

I was in for elk, deer and antelope and drew nothing. Don't know what to do now.

That's great Elk Whisperer! You will remember this year. I might do an otc tag in CO.

The only sure way to hunt New Mexico is by purchasing land owner tags. Expensive, yes. However, chances for a nonresident to draw a tag is very slim.

No elk tag.  Will look for a cliff to jump off of.

Drawback to CO is that the ORV's are everywhere, no respect for the regs. NM takes that seriously.
If I was out of state (and could afford it) I'd hire a NM resident outfitter (not someone who lives in another state).

Was just exploring the Sierra Blanca's in NM the other day. Goegeous country. I'd be content to roam and hunt it simply for the landscape. Though bear in mind im from the east, haha.
