Need wool glove recommendations for use with a tab
« on: June 15, 2016, 12:02:00 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking into some lightweight merino wool glove options for the purpose of using them in conjunction with my Rod Jenkins tab when the temps drop in the fall. Looking at First Lite and Kuiu right now. Anyone have experience with either one of these base layer gloves when using a tab? I'm open to other companies if you have experience with something that works.

I do not use a tab but have been using military wool liner gloves for years and they work great..Can get them online from military surplus stores fairly cheap.

Since Oklahoma weather doesn't get too crazy I don't use a glove on my string hand and rarely on my bow hand. For stand hunting I use a good hand warmer pouch with hot hands.
If I am still hunting or stalking I use a under armor glove which works pretty well.

Hope this helps

I use the surplus wool glove liners and cut out three fingers for the tab. Has always worked well except in bitter cold.

Thanks for the input guys! I am 6'0" 170lbs so keeping my lanky extremities warm is always an issue....even in Oklahoma. The military gloves look like a good bargain but I could definitely see where I would have to cut the fingers out due to the glove's thickness (which I'm not completely opposed to.)

I use Kuiu Ultra Merino wool camo gloves with my 3 under tab. Shoots great without cutting off glove fingers.

I have used the woolen military liners and also have used fleece gloves often with a tab. I have had no need to cut out any of the fingers as I don't use the leather shell, just the liner. Merino would be great, but I have had the military liners since I was a teenager, so I can't really justify spending money. In early to mid season I use the cotton jersey camo gloves both for camo effect and hand warmth.

I use a pair of thin polypropylene liners and my tab fits on without having to cut fingers off the glove.

I switch over to a Damascus glove that time of year and use fingerless mitten glove in conjunction.

I've used fingerless wool gloves - can't remember the brand - in the past and they worked pretty well at both keeping the hands warm and retaining the feel of the string through the tab.

I do the same as Tippit. On the coldest days I can keep my hand with the liner in a pocket and it's more than toasty. When I take it out the heat is retained. No sudden frostiness.

I prefer a large wool mitten on my tab hand that is  designed to fit into a "chopper" mitten.  I can throw a disposable hand warmer into the mitten when temps drop below freezing.  I can slide the mitten into a pocket, such that when I need to reach for the string, the mitten stays in a pocket and hand draws easily and quietly.

I also use a hand muff that straps around the waist when temps drop into teens and lower, in addition to the wool mitten and hand warmer.  The mitten stays in the muff when I need to draw.

Another vote for mil surplus liners, they have lighter weight grayish ones that are thinner than the green ones. Wool/spandex blend if I remember right...

Same here, if you search around you can find the fingerless liners.

First Lite makes a great fingerless wool glove called the talus.  I used them last season from October till well into December when I used a hand warming muff.  They were perfect for shooting with a tab.

Another option of great quality but a little more $$$ would be First Lite or Kuiu.  Great quality items, I believe First Lite is a sponsor now.

Wool golf club or a military issue wool liner glove available at most Army/Navy stores does the trick for me.

I really appreciate the input guys! My wife just gave me a Father's Day gift of First Lite merino wool liners (she's a keeper). I'm excited to see how they work. I'm going to look into the military liners for back-ups this fall. Once again, thanks for the help!
