Newbie Bowhand Pain
« on: January 25, 2007, 12:58:00 PM »
I recently started shooting a bow (pearson colt recurve #40@28). My measured draw length is 29". I am experiencing some pain in the web of my hand after shooting. I am only shooting 20-30 at a time.

Is this normal for a beginner? Or is it something I am doing wrong?

I can post pictures if that would help, but wanted to find out if they were needed first.

Thanks, Pete

Check your brace height, play with it 7"-8", add string silencers, add weight such as quiver full of arrows, loosen grip, shoot heavier arrows 500 to 600 grains, change string to Dacron, last resort limbsavers.

Thanks Big Game, I have string silencers and Limb Savers on it right now. I don't think it is handshock, it really feels like when I draw, all the pressure is focused on a small area of my bowhand.

Check your grip. You could be exerting to much pressure on the grip with your hand. Check Fred Asbels book. He gives a much better discription complete with pictures of how to grip both the long bow and the recurve.

Thanks Bill. I am holding the bow with just my thumb and index finger, trying not to squeeze it. I plan on getting Fred Asbels book soon!
