Discovered the Value of Stumping
« on: June 24, 2016, 04:00:00 PM »
I have never really tried stump shooting. While hunting last week I found some dead stumps that have about the same consistency of balsa wood.

Yesterday I was bored and walked around for a couple hours shooting at the stumps without the aid of my range finder. I broke 2 arrows misjudging distances, but after a bit I came around and shot decently.  This is a great way to test off distances that you can't really get at the range in a real hunting setting. I had so much fun shooting through tight lanes and with branch over hangs etc. Good Fun! Good practice.  Why didn't I do this years ago?!?!

My favorite way to spend time with my bow, for sure. Real life practice, and healing for body mind and soul.

  So much fun. An old timer told me, if your not breaking arrows or losing them, your  not shooting enough!!

Glad you found the joy and practice value of stump shooting!

When I started shooting a bow with a childhood friend at around 9 years old, we did as much stump shooting as anything else.  Living in the country, we'd pack a lunch and spend all day in the woods roaming the local farmlands.

Geez...I wonder how many kids get to do that anymore!  We probably ate lead paint too! :-)

Anyway, been stump shooting ever since.  Other than actually hunting, it's my favorite thing to do with a traditional bow in hand.

Sometimes when I'm hunting and get tired of the routine, I have more fun shooting stumps than hunting. I always have a few stump arrows in my quiver. My favorite way to practice.

Good on you!

I fully support leaving the rangefinder home and pacing them off afterwards.  One more skill to build rather than buy.  ;-)

While going to and from a spot I want to hunt if far enough away I will stump shoot, and on the way there helps me warm up my shooting. Best way for me to practice for the hunt because it puts me as close to the real hunting situation as possible
