Stuck in extreme northern Illinois...
« on: June 27, 2016, 02:03:00 PM »
Zion to be exact. Anyone have any suggestions on things to do/see while here? I'm looking for anything to take my wife's mind off her pending cancer surgery. Looks like we'll be here for another week depending on when they can schedule the surgery.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all,
Tom

Anything to take her mind off the surgery. Indoor, outdoor, anything really. We've been to the lake and she enjoyed that so, maybe a nice park or national forest? Maybe even an archery shop that caters to trad archers. She just started shooting a bow the week we got her diagnoses and she was "really enjoying" herself. (Her words)

Wisconsin Dells!  Find a boat rental place and enjoy the beautiful tea, tannic acid stained water, in which you are paddling.  Of course it's been 46 years I rented a paddle boat up there, so who knows if it is even possible to still find them available.

I've been stuck here since 1978!  I live 30 min from Zion.  Mike Mitten isn't far from you.  He may be available for a get together, just a thought.  You sound like you two have a common bond, wives battling cancer.

Illinois state beach is at the south end of zion.  Sheridan and Wadsworth.  Go east from there.  There is an outdoor range 45-60 minutes from you in Antioch.  Or Bass pro has an indoor range.

I'll p.m. my phone number.  Maybe we can come up with some more ideas.

Glad you saw this Mike.  Hope I didn't overstep any boundaries by dropping your name.

Chain-O-Lakes state park is just about 20 minutes due west of you.  Just take Rt. 173 straight west to Antioch and just past that make a left at Johnsonburg/Wilmot Rd.  Park entrance will be about a mile down and on the left.  Wonderful Park. Lots of nice hiking trails and they have horses you can rent if you want to ride. Bring a fishing pole too, lots of good spots to fish on the fox river.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a beautiful day - mid 70's and sunny.  Hope you get a chance to get out and I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

God Bless!

You are a stone's throw from Illinois Beach State Park. You can easily lose a day there walking trails, walking the beach or simply enjoying the outdoors. If indoors is your ticket, Gurnee Mills mall is within 15 minutes in Gurnee. They have a very nice Bass Pro with a huge aquarium full of gamefish.. If you like baseball, straight north up Sheridan Road in Kenosha is the Kenosha Kingfish semi-pro baseball field. Great fun, cheap too! There is a shooting range on Sheridan as well, The Outdoorsman. They are an archery pro shop as well but primarily modern compound stuff. The Genesee Theater is on Sheridan also, downtown Waukegan. I can forward you the schedule if you wish. Absolutely beautiful, intimate theater. I could go on and on but need to know where your interests lie. I've lived right here the last 35 years.

Herdbull and J. Holden,

I did see your pms but, not until late last night. Our circumstances have changed a bit and Taryn (my wife) will not be able to have the surgery on this trip due to the discovery of some new areas of concern.

I'll call after our morning appointments.

Thank you!

TKO there is a lot of things to do around here, Chain of lakes state park has an out door archery range with a walk through free to the public.Google what ever you would want to do around here and you will most likely find it. I've been around the world and theres no place like Chicago and surrounding area. Summer fest in Milwaukee and Taste of Chicago will keep you more than busy for the week. A dinner Boat Cruise and a ferris wheel ride off Navy peer is always great with the Ladies, saturday evening at Navy Peer has fireworks all summer long. Enjoy.
