« on: July 16, 2016, 09:09:00 PM »
ok now we always here about people who drop in bow weight as they get older I want to know how many of you over 55 are still shooting heavy weight bows. for the sake of this post I am saying bows over 55 pounds. I am 45 and like bows in the 55-65 range and hope to keep shooting them for a long time.

I'm a card-carrying wuss.  Heaviest bow I shoot anymore is my Martin Dream Catcher of 55@28".  But you've seen me shoot and I go a bit past 28" so I may be getting around 58#.

I'm liking the 48# to 55# range for most of my recurves.

I am 63.  The bows I  shoot currently :  50,53,54,55.  Not far from my heaviest which were two at 60#.

58 years old and my go to bow is 62# at 28. I draw close to 30. I still shoot my 75# recurve on occasion.

I still have one that is 62# @28 .
But I do prefer 45# - 50# .
I'm just a few weeks short of 60 .

I'm 62 and have had to drop down to 55# at 28" which is close to my draw length.  It seems I really have to concentrate to get a good release at this lower poundage where with the heavier bows, I didn't even have to think about it. I guess time catches up with everyone.

I was over 55 when I started shooting traditional bows...I started lefty with about 35 pounds...I now shoot righty and lefty with about 65 pounds max, and 55 pounds all day...and that is without really working at it much...all depends on the individual

DDave
I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

I just turned 50. My newest bow is 62lb@31". That puts me into the .340 spine shafts at 650-670 grains with good speed. Thats where I want to be. Pass throughs are the norm. I was shooting a few pounds less but was always stuck between .400 and .340s. and light shafts or very heavy. I lift at the gym 3-4 times per week. While that makes a person strong it also makes you stiff and tight. No telling where that first arrow is going! After being warmed up I guess I could shoot 80lbs.
I wouldn't mind trying some heavier limbs on my new predator but the current setup will kill anything up to moose sized game.
I have a '66 bear kodiak that is 58@28" so it's 67-70 at my draw. That bow stacks after 29" and I should sell it so I don't break it. It's 60" long. I need the new 64" super kodiak.

I'm 63 and my favorite bow at this time is a 75# longbow.

The heaviest bow I used to hunt with when I was younger was 93#.

I never went heavier back then even if I could have because I had a hard time finding arrows to match my 31" recurve draw length and my 30" longbow draw at those bow poundages.

Although I'm still comfortable with my 75# bow, to protect my shoulders I'm on the verge of going to my 71# and 68# longbows.
When I feel I must, I will drop poundage again.

These days my draw length is around 29 1/2".
May your next adventure lighten your heart, test your spirit, and nourish your soul.
