Go Pro on a bow
« on: September 05, 2016, 07:47:00 AM »
Is anyone using a go pro on a trad bow and if so what kind of hook up are you using? I hunt with a three piece Shaffer Silver tip re-curve with side quiver mounts. The limb bolts or the quiver mounts is the direction I am thinking but I would love to hear anyone's ideas.

Thanks Brian

I have a friend that used one but since he found a bracket for his I phone he put the Go Pro down saying the phone was much more user friendly and he prefers the quality as well.

I don't have any experience using a bow mounted camera so have nothing to offer here. I've always felt that the vibrations at the shot would negate any quality footage and isn't the shot and its result the whole idea behind filming one's hunt. I've seen footage from a friend's hunt with a mounted camera and am not impressed.

There has been some good self videos here but I think they were tree mounted.

If you already own the camera, shoot it at your range. The ultra-wide view makes things grow TINY in a real hurry. I've thought of setting one up on the other side of the path and starting it rolling at the first sign of deer/turkey coming. The shake on release prolly only distorts the image and rattles the camera's innards too.

I made a bracket using my phone on my spotting scope and it works great. You can zoom the phone in and out for picks and video easily should work the same for a bow.

I used my phone last year for video's and pictures from the stand and blinds. Then your able to crop and zoom in even more with the right program on your computer, I use Picasa.
Looks like I need to make a bracket for my longbow and try it    :bigsmyl:

The best and easiest mounting method I've found is a simple spring loaded clip.  Mine came with a bunch of generic GoPro mounts that I bought as a group on ****.  (By the way, I would recommend the generic mounts, as mine have proven to be more durable, and probably 75% less expensive that the authentic ones.)

I use my spring loaded clip for almost everything.  I hook it on my belt and carry it everywhere, then when I want to get some footage, I can clip it somewhere and point it toward the action.  I've clipped it on my bow quiver, my belt (facing my target), my shoulder, and the forearm sleeve of my bow arm.

I also clip it to my lifejacket when on the water, backpack straps, tree limbs, etc.  It's been by far the best mount for my use.

Here's an image of what I'm talking about:

I don't mount my GoPro on the bow because it does shake a lot when releasing an arrow.
Life is a whole lot easier when you just plow around the stump.

I would check these out. When I end up buying a Go Pro this is what I'm going to get with it.

Not a Go Pro but I use Ion camera which is the bullet shape and Doesn't have the wide lens. I just use rubber bands to attach to my bow for a real POV. I have a Candaian duck hunt that looked great.

I made a mount last season using a Great Northern gadget adapter. Worked "ok" but the shock from my ASL bows was just too violent. 1) you would lose the arrow after release so most times you would not get the arrow impact. 2) the camera mounts kept breaking after a few shots. This year I am trying a shoulder mount. I think I will like it better than the bow mount. We'll see next weekend.

I'm amazed at how many folks are into catching the "moment".  I prefer that to be a private thing.

I have tried it.  I used a "sportsman's mount" available at any go pro retailer, it has a padded pipe clamp style holding system. It was clamped onto a bolt I screwed into the quiver mount. or the stabilizer  mount on my KMag. The quality is rubbish. it shakes like crazy. a head mount is better.  There are also many better cameras for hunting action. (fish eye makes everything seem WAY far away.) As for capturing the moment, I totally get the people who want to keep it private. My father and I can't hunt together anymore and he really gets a kick out of my poor quality hunting videos. Mine don't make it any farther than that. I will leave the published vid's to Clay!

There is a guy on youtube, Ulrik Orskov who self films a lot of bow hunts with a Go Pro. He uses a headband type mount that you can see in some of this trailer video

And that is what he used for this cool action sequence:

I use a midland action cam, which is very similar. I found that in general it makes tings too small to really see much facing AWAY from the bow (toward the deer) BUT, I have started turning it back towards myself, and letting my arm mounted cam handle the shot. The little cam now faces me, and I get myself before the shot, during, and after. I like watching those films almost as much as the kill shots!! It's amazing the faces we make and things we do that we don't realize until it's caught on camera!

I used electrical tape last year and filmed the buck I killed. Taped my iphone to the riser below the shelf. It worked fine except at the shot.  Impact wasn't clear, but it was better than nothing. I like being able to relive the moment.
