Journal and field notes ?
« on: September 07, 2016, 12:49:00 AM »
Were can I get and what do you use for journals or field notes?

Any recommendations for a durable hard or soft back type?

Looking for something my 13 y/o can start documenting his outdoor experiences.

He turns 14 next month, thinking this is a good gift idea.

Thanks

I created a word template and add to that ... That way it's legible as I get sloppier with my handwriting... I can also add photos .. Without fear of them getting torn or misplaced

That's a nice one, might just be what I am looking for. Plus like you, I want him to be able to use it in the field. If I we are out some where for a week or so its easier to write it down then than to try and recall what happened 5 days ago.

I know a word template/digital etc. is nice. But kids these days spend too much time behind a computer at school as is.

I write in my journal several times a day as things happen.  At my age, I can't even remember what I've had for breakfast.     :bigsmyl:  I've always just used a small 4x6 inch or so binder notebook for a journal.

I use a small 3x5" write in the rain book and then transfer it all to a word document throughout the winter.

I found mine in a book store. I told my son that I kept a journal of my outdoor experiences, from when I was young kid. He replied "where do you keep it"?

I have enjoyed looking back  remembering my hunting and fishing experiences with my dad and my son. Friends also.

There are a lot of things that have changed over the years, especially my attitudes.

Rite-in-the-Rain makes/made a Bow Hunter Journal (and other specific outdoor/sportsmen journals). They have kits that come with the journal, cover, and a pen.

Upon looking at the site for a link, it seems they may be discontinuing those topic-specific journals....  http://www.riteintherain.com/sportsmen

I'm sure if you googled rite-in-the-rain bow hunt or big game, or whatever, you could still find them.

Oh, and I know  Field Notes  brand is popular in survival/diy/homestead-type networks...they have lots of options too.

They have options for storing or otherwise cataloging your notebooks and stuff over the years.

I made this one for my dad last Christmas to go with the knife/sheath I made him the year before.  I used a $5 journal refill from Office Depot and attached the leather cover with contact cement.
