Topo map apps for phone
« on: September 23, 2016, 05:34:00 PM »
Anyone use topo map apps for their phone.
Witch ones do you like or work good.
Want to be able to use it even when data not available with just the GPS in my phone.
I already this I go on my Garmin gps but hate having to dig it out of my pack just to find a draw on a ridge and find a way to get around deer with out winding me. So an app on my phone would be fast and easy

Backcountry Navigator for Android and GAIA for iPhone. Download maps at home on WiFi or cellular and then put in airplane mode in the field to conserve battery.

I use onxmaps. You download the area you want on your phone then can use it without service. Also gives landowner names and property boundaries which has been nice. Pretty accurate as far as I can tell

GAIA for Iphone OR Android.  You have the whole country at your disposal.  Just down load the area you will be in while you have internet then call up the map as needed.  Used it for two+ weeks in Colorado this year and only turned my Garmin on to set a base camp waypoint and never turned it on again.  USGS Topo as well as Satellite.

GAIA works in airplane mode with just the GPS.  Only $20 for life.

I have ended up with three I use a lot.

Topo Maps is a great app that downloads the USGS Quadrant based on the location you choose. It saves them to your phone for future use. I use this a lot when scouting. Can save waypoints and does not use a ton of storage, power or processing power.

MotionX GPS - Used this one the longest. It is a great app for viewing satellite view. The best part about this one for me is it allows you to save a waypoint and then share it via text or email. When scouting I will share waypoints via email with myself and look at them on topo when back at my computer. During season I hunt a lot of public land and get well off the beaten path. When I get to a location I plan to hunt I email my location to my wife. It gives her peace of mind knowing where I am in case I were to have any problems.

onXMaps - This is probably the best featured app. However, I bought the sd card for my Garmin Montana and use it more than my phone. When I bought the SD card the phone version was included for free. The biggest issue I have with it is it is the slowest of any of the apps I use to load and if I slide the screen I have to wait for it to refresh. Part of that is I have an older iPhone but regardless it is the most unusable app for me so it does not get used a lot.

Hope this helps!

Not quite the same, but I use Google Earth a lot.  Zoom into all the areas you are hunting while at home on the WiFi.  Phone or tablet saves zoomed in imagery to internal memory.  Now when I'm in the middle of nowhere MT or WA with no cell reception but still have GPS I just hit the little nav button in Google Earth and a blue dot pops up at my location on the saved imagery.  Use two finger slide to render 3D.  Usually I keep the LCD and GPS off except when making these spot checks to save batteries.  Lots of other GPS/topo apps out there, but this is my favorite method.  If I could just make elk appear as little red dots...

The GAIA app, does this allow you to add topo apps and then mark your position on the topo or follow your "tracks" as on my garmin?

Back Country Navigator for me too.  You can download maps for the areas you hunt to help save battery life.

Backcountry Navigator is not available for Apple devices.  I was trying to find it to check it out and it wasn't there so I had to go to their site and found out it's an ANDROID only app.

For those that use IPhones and Apple tablets, do you use Gaia, OnX Hunt, or what?

I'd like to get something to have that's easy to use and is able to guide me back to the truck or my camp if I were to ever get lost, which I've been told is entirely possible down here in the Sam Houston National Forest.
