New farm and Big Doe!
« on: October 02, 2016, 02:02:00 PM »
Well this hunt took place on a farm that my wife and I are buying and living on once the house is ready. I've scouted this farm this summer and got pictures of a few great bucks! I went out opening morning to a stand I had put up a week earlier on some fresh acorns that were dropping and I had deer in there every morning according to me camera. I went in the and saw 2 young bucks and that was it, I passed up the shot on the one buck at 20 yard and just enjoyed seeing him.

October 1st I was in the stand that morning expecting to get a shot at a doe but nothing showed! I went out mid day to put some cameras out and look for some fresh sign. I got to the NE corner of the woods were I had a stand already up and a mineral site from this summer. Now it had been raining for 2 days straight before that day so any tracks I found would be fresh. Right in front of my stand my mineral was hit really good and there were white oaks dropping! With all fresh sign and a perfect wind I decided to sit that stand that evening.

I got in the stand around 4pm and around 5:40 I saw my first deer. It was a lone doe feeding  on acorns, after about 20 minutes 2 yearlings showed up but the 3 of them stayed out around 80 yards. Finally I had the big doe heading right for me, I was self filming my hunt so I got the camera ready. She came straight to my tree and stood there at 10 yards facing me. She browsed for a bit and finally turned and walked broadside, she stopped perfectly broadside at 10 yards! I got the camera on her and got my tab on the string, but she caught me moving my hand! I told myself to not rush the shot and to pick a hair. I got to half draw and I saw her tense up and shift her weight to her rear legs so I knew she was seconds from blowing out of there. I hit anchor and held it long enough to calm down and the shot was gone. I'm using lighted nocks and they work awesome, the shot was perfect and I instantly knew she wasn't going far! Somehow she made it 100 yards before expiring, the shot was a perfect heart shot!

I got down pretty quick because it looked like it was going to rain, luckily it went around me. The shot was a complete pass through with half of my arrow sticking out of the ground and the other half a few yards away (she broke the arrow when she whirled to take off after the shot). I found her within a couple minutes and couldn't have been happier, this is probably my biggest doe I've shot. I used my new to me A&H ACS 3pc longbow that's 64" 61@28 (got it Wednesday!) and 300gr Tuffheads for a total arrow weight of 600gr.

Hopefully I can get a chance at a good buck this year but so far this season I've had a blast! Good luck to everyone this season!
