arrow stains and sealer
« on: October 09, 2016, 08:04:00 PM »
Are there any wood stains and sealers that will work well with Bohning fletch glue and or fletch tape?

Wondering what others are using

I don't know about the tape but I kind of sure with a sealer you have to use Duco works great. There might be others I don't know, I just know what works for me.

I use Duco with Minwax Polycrylic sealer.
Stains should have a sealer on them.
Not sure about the Bohning fletch tite but the tape should work with about any sealer.

I use Two Rivers alcohol based stain and Fiebings leather stain.  Over those I use wipe-on MinWax Poly.  The Bohning Fletch-lac, Duco Cement and fletch tape all work fine over the stains and sealer.

Oil based tractor enamel  paint (they stuff they paint heavy equipment with) in a spray can is a very strong and durable finish, cover up the wood grain though, but you get a highly visable arrow.   duco works on it, not sure about bohning glue

Tape will work on anything. You just need 3 or 4 hands to use it. I use Minwax polyurethane sealer and Duco cement works just fine on it.

I use stained Watco oil with Duco. I am never going to use anything else, it likes to have a warm breeze to dry.  I use three coats.  so far i have never lost a feather with the Duco.  I have used fletch tape, but I put a drop of Grizzly Super Glue on each end.  That latest version of Bohning glue is not as good as the original stuff.

I use varathane stains and floor finish or poly for sealer. They work great and I use the tape and fletch tite

MinWax stains and Profin sealer. Both Duco and tape work well.

Back to OP. The Bohning glue you mentioned was made to work with Bohning Laq paints. Being old school I do not mix. Bohning does make stain as well.
These days even Bohning is going to water based products. I am not sure if the glue you mentioned will work.
For wood arrows I would get Min Wax stains and  waterbased Polycrillic. Low smell and water clean up. Ducco glue works.
The wood arrows I made recently were cap dipped with Bohning paint, crested, then I put the min wax polycrillic over that. The bottom portion of shaft I have been using pure Tung oil.  I do all my fletching with Saunders NPV glue.
