Fir and Feather
« on: October 13, 2016, 11:10:00 PM »
It's been a long time since I have been able to make arrows since my retirement due to disability but I finally have a place to make arrows now at my leisure. My first batch is for friend Dan Toelke. he likes heavy arrows and I have some fir and larch that are HEAVY. Hope he likes these fir telephone poles I made up 16 for him to use and abuse.    :)   [/IMG]

I agree, really nice work - and that's the weight range of the wooden arrows I hunt with!

I'm curious about your friend Dan's draw length and bow weight.
May your next adventure lighten your heart, test your spirit, and nourish your soul.

Dan draws 30 1/2" and needs an arrow at least 31". His bows are all right at 53# or so at his draw length. Being extra heavy shafts i added 3-4 pounds spine when I picked them out of my stock pile to help overcome paradox. He likes 70-75# spines and these range up to 3# more. I am betting these are the heaviest woods he has shot in quite some time.

Thank you very much for the reply.

I draw longbows 29 1/2" to 30", depending on the shape and thickness of the handle and I draw recurves around 31".

I shoot heavier bows but I plan on going down in the future to preserve my shoulders.

Cedar is the only wood I've ever shot but it's interesting to see and to read about other types of wood arrows.

I've always bought my wood arrows (I think I was 12 years old when I got the first ones) but I truly respect those who craft their own!

Maybe I'll give it a try someday... but I guess that I'd better hurry up, LOL!

Thank you for the complements! I plan on making more now that I have a place. Takes me much longer as I can neither sit nor stand for any great length of time. My preferred arrow wood is lodgepole. I have lots of that. I have so many in the 40-55 spine range I may be forced to buy another bow just to use them up LOL. I still have my airbrush and plan on getting another compressor for it so I can fade the stains better. I want to try and fading out of one color into another. I plan on using some dyes as well.

Nice looking arrows! I also like the natural colors...I've always wanted to shoot wood, maybe one of these days.
