Nock height study (your participation needed).
« on: October 19, 2016, 11:34:00 AM »
As a string maker, I am curious to know how high above center of your string your top nocking point typically is.  What I mean by this, is if you measure the string tip to tip and say it is 60", find the center of the string(30"), then measure how high your top nocking point is above that.

You can post your answer simple like,  2" expressing that the top nocking point is 2" above center.  Again, this is NOT how high your nocking point is above square with a bow square, this is in relation to how high it is in comparrison to the center of your string.

Thank you in advance for everyone who will do this.

Daniel,

62" Blacktail one piece it is right at 1 3/4"

62" Wes Wallace one piece is 2 3/8"

64" Blacktail T/D is 2"
A man's true measure is not found in what he says, but in what he does.

Every one of my Bear bows is around 1 3/4" .
My Dwyer is about 1 1/2" .
My Ferguson is almost 2 1/2" .

not for this study.  But I am finding if very interesting how they vary so much.  Makes me wonder why?  Bow design, shooting split?  limbs out of tiller?

Daniel,  So this is interesting...are you trying to understand how much a the bow shelf is cut above center or how much variance there is in where folks set there nock?

At first I thought is was the latter but now I am thinking it must be the former.  I haven't measured mine like you suggested but I set all of my bows about 3/4" above the shelf using a square.  I just don't find much need to tune beyond that (of nock height).

Honestly, I was just wondering.  Its very interesting how an individuals results can vary so much when swapping between bows and I would assume that they have their nocking points set up at the same height on each bow.  Very interesting to me.

do some bowyers put their shelf height at different heights?

I'm sure they do Daniel. The other day I cut my shelf down approx. 3/8" to get my arra sittin on my hand. I always wondered if the bow's center should be at the throat. If so the distance from there to shelf and the distance above square from the shelf allows 2 variables.Guess it's a good thing I'm just a stupid shipbuilder! Aint got a clue bout bow design.
