Hey guys, today is a proud day for me. I have been trying to get a turkey with my bow for 4 years now. I have had many failed attempts including a few misses. I have had worst luck getting a turkey then any other animal I have hunted.
I climbed into the stand yesterday evening and was just getting settled in when I heard something behind me on the edge of a grown up field. I looked back and was surprised to see a flock of about 10 turkeys coming my way. The problem was there was so many tree limbs and brush that I did not think I would ever have a shot.
The turkeys fed in closer and I just sat there watching. I tried to move a little and one of the turkeys picked me off. It sounded an alarm "putt" and I figured the gig was up.
I sat there solid as a stone. Amazingly the turkeys dismissed it and went back to feeding. It was then that I saw a hole through the brush. The opening was small, no bigger then a basketball, but it was my only chance. As if by fate a hen turkey happened to stop right in that very opening only 12 yards away. I slowly drew back and hit anchor. I took extra time to make sure my aim was true before releasing the shot.
The simmons tipped arrow plowed through the hen! She took 2 struggled hops and dropped dead in a heap not 15 yards from where I was sitting.
I was ecstatic! All those failures over the years just made it all worth it when it finally came together. I will be fortunate enough to serve my own turkey this year for thanksgiving!
I thank the Lord for all his blessings and for allowing us to find such joy in his beauty and creation of the outdoors. We are truly blessed.
I used my Timberhawk Strike recurve which draws 51@30 with an Easton axis 340 shaft and Simmons Interceptor broadhead. This has proven to be a deadly combo! Good luck to everything! Enjoy SS
