I had the good fortune to hunt Iowa this past week for the first time. I had the time of my life and my wife did too, and she doesn’t hunt. She hung out with my buddies wife which is a story in it self.
After a couple blown opportunities I connected on this nice nine point. The shot was a real good double lung pass through. He ran about 50 yards but not real fast and tail down and stopped and looked back to see what that was all about. He then took a couple steps, paused, and started walking. At this point he was almost out of sight behind some tree so I as quick as I could pulled my video camera out of my pocket and by the time it turned on I could not find him. The buck had gotten behind too many trees and over the ridge. He didn’t go far though. I found him just beyond the last sighting.
Earlier this fall I had the good fortune to get was at that time my biggest buck yet with the bow and led off my story with the blind squirrel line. I was immediately taken to task by Barry Wensel since I had attended his boot camp. In fact, here is his response:
“Blind squirrel?? Blind squirrel??? What do you mean? Didn't you attend Barry Wensel's Trophy Whitetail Bootcamp in the spring of 2016? And now... you shoot the biggest buck of your life?? Coincidence??? I think not! You are now a fine tuned trophy harvesting machine and we'll expect this from you EVERY year from now on. Good job buddy. Way to keep your cool. Congrats. BW “
Yes, Barry does deserve his fair share of credit here.
As I said, this was the time of my life and I hope I can do it again.
The blood trail was everything that you ever hope for.
